You do realize that ESPN owns the rights to all of the televised SEC games except one, right?

Then shouldn’t they be telling their talking heads to push for a season? Put pressure on the presidents to create a plan. They still have a month. Instead, they are all saying to cancel,

It depends on who you are really referring to when you say talking heads. I don't think they want to influence their personalities either way because you can start to have massive issues when you do that. Whether you agree with them or not, I believe most are giving their opinions on the situation.
I don't believe Bob Chapek or Robert A. Iger is calling ESPN executives everyday trying to get them to push a narrative that will cancel the season. That doesn't make sense from multiple angles.

But thats not how this works, companies don't just let certain areas tank so they can push an agenda and cover their loses somewhere else. You are really downplaying how hard companies(even massively successful ones) push to get the best margins possible.
That's true except in the case of a monopoly, where agendas absolutely do takeover and is why we have antitrust laws.
ESPN isn't a monopoly, per se, but they are damn close to one, and they obviously have a political agenda with their daytime programming. Of that there's no question.
Again, most companies only motivation is pure profit. But it's a different story when you have assets that are essentially timeless AND priceless, and you're pretty much the go-to brand for cable sports coverage. IF they wanted to push an agenda, they could absolutely afford it, because their inventory (along with their viewers) are basically guaranteed to return.

Why in holy frick would ESPN want to cancel football?
I swear the collective IQ of this country has dropped 20 points in the last couple of years.

Eh, people were just posting how ESPN is losing subs and has been for quite awhile now. I think that is way overstated but ESPN certainly isn't timeless and even if they were, it still stands that the company doesn't want to lose revenue. At the end of the day, people want more money in their pockets.
Most companies go "woke" because they are looking to gain more money, not the kindness of their hearts. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

My argument was never that they couldn't afford to, it was that they wouldn't want to.

To be fair, ESPN college football twitter also posted Jim Harbaugh and the President's statement, which are both pro-play

So, when we don't have football next year because the virus is still a part of our lives will that be ok too?
Are we just supposed to cancel everything in life and live under a rock.
And don't say well... next year we will have a vaccine. There is no guarantee we will have one nor is there a guarantee that it will be effective.
At some point you have to accept that this is going to be with us and that we need to learn to live with it.
And I don't particularly care one way or the other on football. I can find some way to fill my time other than watching CFB. But kids need to go back to school, social functions for kids should resume.
The cure is becoming worse than the cause.
Wait until you see what this will do to cities like Starkville/Oxford/Tuscaloosa/Auburn/Little Rock etc. All of these cities literally survive off of school and football season.
It is just a guess but I would be willing to bet upwards of 50-60% of small service related businesses will close in these cities and it could be worse if college kids don't have an opportunity to return to regular school.
We will be doing irreparable damage to small businesses in these college towns.
It may be different for your schools in big cities but for the small towns that happen to have an SEC school will be recked.

Right, a sports network wants sports canceled.

You are trying to apply rational thought. Big mistake.
Disney/ESPN are willing to lose any amount of money in support of the cause.
Think of it as a political donation and it makes more sense.
Dicks Sporting Goods anyone?

ESPN is probably done if there’s not football.
They are bleeding revenue. Go woke, go broke.

I don't think so, ESPN is heavily invested in college football. I think it's more talking heads saying things they think will get them more listeners

So why in your head do you think a tv company thats programming is based only off of sports would want said sports cancelled? This is the dumbest narrative being floated.
Additionally, wasn't ESPN in a financial struggle before this happened? I recall them laying off some of their on air personalities as well restructuring contracts with other employees.
In the alternative, maybe they overextended themselves with these huge TV contracts and this is a way out from under them.

They have the lowest ratings on the network of all time
Just posted it yesterday but WETV has higher ratings in their 9pm block for Love After Lockup: Florida than any running of Sportscenter or ESPN daytime TV in the last week.
So no. Its not them trying to get listeners or viewers. They are off the rails. Intentionally and without care.
