Would you guys rather have a 2019 LSU/late 2010s/early '20s Bama offense with an above-average defense, or an elite, hard-hitting 2021 UGA defense with an above-average offense?

Elite offense is way more fun to watch than elite defense. See 2022 Vols vs 2012 Gators.

Early 2010's Bama defenses wouldn't be able to stop 19 LSU. After Bama beat LSU in the Natty, Nick began recruiting lighter, faster linebackers. Nick was always a step ahead. He saw the game evolving. For their era, those early 2010's defenses were brutal. They mauled teams.

20 years ago, I’d take an elite defense. Today, I’d rather have an elite offense

Elite offense is more fun for sure...especially when you mock them after like Spurrier did...

Elite defense wins championships.
Just need a competent offense to score 20+ and you’re going to win most competitive games.

In 23 LSU had an elite QB and an elite offense. It did not turn out well.

Not really. I thought your OL was lacking.

Different folks with different preferences, to be certain.

I grew up in the era of defenses - the first player I can remember vividly seeing play at the college level was Derrick Thomas and it goes from there.

I'll always consider the 2011 Alabama team, and that 2011 Alabama/LSU game, what football is supposed to be - hard hitting slug fests.

Case in point:
LSU was 18th and Alabama 19th in PPG that season
In point differential, Alabama was #1 and LSU was #5

That Alabama team gave up 7.1 ppg - in a time that offenses had already made huge strides and a lot of rules had been put forth in favor of them. LSU gave up just 11 ppg.

Now you may see scores drop significantly again, but that's due to offensive cohesion being a thing of the past. It's hard to develop an offensive chemistry and implement complex offensive schemes when you are having to develop a new player at 50-75% of the positions every year.

19 LSU would have spread that defense and smoked them. It was a different game back then. In 08 Utah spread that Bama d and beat them. Why do you think Malzahn had success ? Neither of those teams had a Jefferson or Chase. Burrow was other worldly.
