U of Tennessee was founded almost 100 years before U of Texas.

Matter of fact, U of Tennessee was founded before Texas was a state.

The university was founded prior to our own statehood. It's the oldest secular university west of the Eastern Continental Divide. Back when it was founded most universities and colleges were very much affiliated with religions and/or denominations of Christianity.

1794 - UT is founded.
1796 - Tennessee becomes a state.
1845 - Texas becomes a state.
1883 - UTex is founded.

Georgia* and Tennessee are the two oldest schools in the SEC and two of the oldest public universities in the country. UGA was founded in 1785 but didn't admit students until 1801.

Even so, it's important to remember that Texas is joining us. The SEC is not joining them. Unlike their current conference, the world doesn't revolve around them. As newer members they have to accept that entering our world means giving up a lot of things they took for granted in their old one. They sure as hell don't get to waltz in and demand that everyone else change for them.

Besides, it's not hard to say UTex, UTx, UTa or whatever else they choose to adopt.

OP isn't a Tennessee fan. Pretty much every time this subject comes up, it's started by fans of different teams.

RA'd for sticky, should stay up for next few years

13 Charter members
Alabama
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
Georgia Tech
Kentucky - principle in founding
Louisiana State
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Sewanee aka University of the South - the Iron Men of lore
Tennessee - the only UT in the SEC
Tulane - the only TU in the SEC
Vanderbilt - principle in founding

Since the founding in the early 1930's the SEC has always had "The Six" tho in modern times (1980's forward) these are the current 6

Alabama
Auburn
Tennessee
Georgia
Florida
Louisiana State

Based on the modern interpretation of the MNC (BCS and CFP) to even be considered you must have a modern BCS or CFP championship. Does not matter if you won in your former conference so at this point the following 6 additions are on EQUAL footing with ZERO

Arkansas
South Carolina - had history in the SoCon
Missouri
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Utx - austin

Folks in austin and Norman need to win here or just be part of the pack.

They're joining a conference that was quite literally founded in Knoxville, TN. They can't possibly be surprised by any of this.

You are not very well informed, this man said "I am the king" and pretty sure nobody thought otherwise.

Same goes for this insistence on who the "real" UT is.

No, not really. This is the SEC, Vols are Charter member, you are not. If you become part of the SEC, UT will always be Tennessee and TU will always be Tulane. Who cares who trademarked UT first, in this conference, austin is not Knoxville, and never will be.

Tulane is not really relevant to the SEC.

You are an idiot.

Tulane stadium was recognized across the USA and their early success helped gain attention for Southern football outside the South. That would be like saying University of Chicago was not really relevant to the B1G. Both schools chose academics over continued football success and should be respected for this choice. If Tulane does not turn down their Rose Bowl invitation, Alabama football probably dies before it is born.

They have not been members since before most people on this board were born

Sewanee is even older but the "Iron Men" is the core of what this conference became. As a fan of a school that hypes traditions you should respect others who actually did more with less. If Centre does not beat Harvard you probably never get your "12th man" so just be quiet when adults are speaking and respect what they did to allow you to have a voice now.

Who give a crap about the rest of the country. This is the SEC footprint so SEC = University of Tennessee.

Does it really matter? People will use UT to refer to both schools. Get used to it.

Which UT is historically better?

Football

Tennessee > Uta
(6) = Tennessee (1938 - 1998, from 3 different coaches)
(4) = austin (1963 - 2005, from 2 different coaches)

quote:

Basketball

Tennessee > Uta
Both M and W

quote:

Baseball

Uta > Tennessee (tho Vols are Life Champions, Dores run baseball in TN)

quote:

Academics

Without the PUF, could be Tennessee. Count your blessings and be humble when geography gives you a leg up

quote:

Alumni

Uta get a plus with the Doonebury guy but that is well offset with huge negatives for McConathay

quote:

Endowment

Again, without the PUF the folks in austin would just be another state school.

Clearly you need to quit drinking that Burnt Orange Koolaid and listening to Chimp Brown.

Doubtful

Just because you want to believe Uta poops ice cream does not mean your new conference mates will eat it.

Shut up, newb. Seniority matters and UT means University of Tennessee in this conference.

If UT didn’t meant Texas to the Aggies, they wouldn’t have invented the tu pet name to cope. Stop simping and trying to be one of the gang. You’re just as much an outsider as us.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHA There is literally no poll that would rank Tennessee football as more successful than Texas

Hasn't the mens team never even been to the final four? HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Uh.... the PUF makes up for an entire endowment that has almost surpassed Harvard's?

Holy shite, grandpa. You are really REALLY bad at this.

Oh wait, you're the same guy that thought WVU and Baylor were the exact same school

Clearly you can not comprehend 3rd grade math

6 > 4
3 > 2

Neyland > DKR

quote:

Hasn't the mens team never even been to the final four?

UT MCBB = 0 Final Fours, 1 Elite Eight, 8 Sweet Sixteens
Uta MCBB = 3 Final fours, 7 Elite Eight, 10 Sweet Sixteens

Neither have a Natty, and that its the measuring stick in this conference. Also, several counted for Uta were from the WWII era.

UT WCBB = 8 National Champions, 5 Runner Up, 18 Final Fours
Uta WCBB = 1 National Championship, 0 Runner Up, 3 Final Fours

Again, did you even go to high school much less college?

quote:

Dude... you know this one isn't even close.

That was my point, the PUF put you well ahead. Aside from poor math skills your reading comprehension is even worse.

This is getting embarrassing for you.

Can you read? Your lack of education is embarrassing. I am not embarrassed at all about what I wrote. your sad attempt at deflection is the embarrassment.

Oh my, what a sick burn. Do they have a Village Idiot in your home town because clearly you could do well in competition with snappy comebacks like that.

No they won't. We will either refer to you as Texas or simply "the cows."
