Sorted by highest finish in AP Poll
(season this placement last occurred)
Alabama: #1 (2017)
Auburn: #1 (2010)
Florida: #1 (2008)
LSU: #1 (2007)
Tennessee: #1 (1998)
Georgia: #1 (1980)
Texas A&M: #1 (1939)
Arkansas: #2 (1964)
Ole Miss: #2 (1960)
South Carolina: #4 (2013)
Missouri: #4 (2007)
Kentucky: #6 (1977)
Mississippi St: #9 (1940)
Vanderbilt: #12 (1948)
Question:
Why does the AP Poll hate Ole Miss and Arkansas? (See: 1960 & '64).
Thankfully, they started releasing their final poll after all of the bowls were completed soon after these seasons.

It would be better, to put things into proper perspective, if we knew each program's highest finish this millennium.
The reason I make that observation is because, let's say, A&M has finished Top 5 recently, right? But their #1 finish in '39 makes it look like it's been awhile.

In before someone points out some of those teams did not, in fact, win them all.
Just the ones that mattered most.

A great debate would be who deserved the 1960 national title. Before the bowls:
Missouri (10-0)
Ole Miss (9-0-1)
Minnesota (8-1)
All three held the #1 ranking during the season.
Had Missouri defeated Kansas on the field, they would have won both the AP and UPI. Due to KU playing with an ineligible player, weeks later the win was forfeited, and later given the W to Missouri, but it was too late to make a difference in the polls.
The state of Mississippi in the 60s is partly a reason why they were denied the #1 final honor in 1960.
(8-1) Minnesota won the title before losing Rose Bowl to finish (8-2).

Sucks too because we beat a top 5 Navy team in the Orange Bowl afterwards.

and Navy was solid then in football.
Missouri was coached by 1977 ND National Champion Head Coach Dan Devine. One of his assistants, Merv Johnson was part of that 1960 Missouri squad. Followed him to ND and then left to go to OU and has been part of OU since the 80s.

Not sure when the AP began to issue a final poll after Bowl games, but in 1950 their final poll was before the Bowl games.
A 7th ranked Kentucky team whose only loss was to a 11-1 Tennessee team beat top ranked Oklahoma in the Bowl game. Accordingly I believe if the AP would have published a true final poll after Bowl games Kentucky would have most likely been in the top 3?
BTW Babe Parilli agrees with me

An interesting note about 1950. UT’s only loss that year was a 7-0 loss to Mississippi State in Starkvegas. General Bob Neyland was so mad and distraught that he vowed to never bring team back to State. True to his word, UT and State played either in Knoxville or Memphis from 1951-1986 (games were intermittent through those years). 1987 was the first time back to Scott Field for UT.
The 7-0 loss to State cost UT a Natty as I believe they were the best team in the country that year.

It's crazy how there was no regularized SEC scheduling until the first expansion (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Didn't some teams play more conference games than others some years? And it also lead to certain teams barely playing for multiple decades at a time. We think we have it rough now with the 6 year wait

issuing final polls/champions before bowl games is one of the dumbest things CFB has ever done. It's why I have no problems at all claiming 1942 (and the school does) despite rival fans only saying we have 1 title.
We went 11-1 while "champion" OSU went 9-1. OSU beat 2 ranked teams ranked 13th and 4th, and finished their season winning over Iowa Pre-Flight for their 10th game, and being crowned champ before Decemeber. In the regular season UGA beat 2 ranked teams ranked 3rd and 2nd, and capped the season by shutting out ranked UCLA in the rose bowl.

Correction: Navy was #4 AP.
Put us down for 1960. We're claiming the frickin' 1960 Championship. Undefeated after kansas gets caught cheatin'. Frick kansas forever. Minnesota had a reg. season loss, just the facts.

I know LSUs answer. They have finished AP#1 twice in 125 years, 1958 and 2007. We fired one of the guys to do it and replaced him with a shrimp boat captain.

Arkansas 1964 - There was no AP poll after the bowl games. We ended #1 in all the polls taken after the bowl games.
And we are undefeated so far this year.
