I know they do. I don't know what the percentages are, but I know they do.

For one year. 8th grade or 9th grade I think I'm remembering. One of the two.

You back up a year, maybe academically you're fine anyway but you refine reading skills and love for reading, and then athletically you've increased - at whatever percentage for each individual case - your ability to get a football scholarship at the proverbial West Georgia or Delta State or UA-Monticello, or walkon at the proverbial Middle Tennessee State or Auburn?

I'd guess this is what Stetson did.

It's a win-win IMHO.

It's funny all the losers on here who are jealous of Stetson, and he's getting an economics degree

The really good ones get “held back” in elementary school, at least they did at Benton Academy in the 90s.

I hear more about this in baseball than football.

More evidence that your actual time spent around the game is limited

I’ve never met a single person who took a “redshirt” year to be held back in 8th/9th grade for football. Almost universally, that happens in early elementary years.

I think you’ll find most people here will concur with that.

I never said anything about "most people" - I said I don't know what the percentages are

You've never "met a single person who took a redshirt...8th/9th grade", and yet there's already posts on page one of this thread saying they've seen it more in baseball than in football

I didn’t say you said most people. You said “alot” (sic). I said I’ve never met anyone who’s been held back that late for football, and I believe most people here will agree with that.

It’s too early to be drunk.

A lot of families hold boys back before first grade.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve seen a lot of. Repeating Kindergarten or first grade. Never heard of anyone repeating 8th or 9th outside of failing academically.

Your post is off base and unfounded.

It may be more common with a August/September birthday when parents decide on first grade to hold a young child back, mostly boys because they mature later. Some may do it for sports and others for academics. Personally, I have never heard of parents doing this to a kid once they have made circles of friends. This would also label the child slow and totally disagree with your post

I have no issues with Bennett. His age has been grossly overblown.

I was entertained that you tried to put an academic spin on this practice.

Parents do this shite for their own gratification.

Baseball now has post high school academies where they take classes at a juco and play jucos but don’t cut into their ncaa eligibility.

We had several players that repeated 8th grade at my high school. I had the choice but chose not to do so.
