My son is a Junior who plays HS football and just turned 17 (last week). There is a Freshman QB on his team that is 8 months younger than him. Held back and birthday timing...so my son will be 17 his entire Sr. Season...when this kid is a Senior, he will be 19. The Freshman already has an offer from an SEC program.

They did at my son's school. It was younger than that though. I want to say if they started the 7th grade it started their "sports clock" so to speak, so most of them did it by 6th grade. It helped them in jr high ball but honestly by 9th-10th grade it all balanced out again.

We had several players that repeated 8th grade at my high school. I had the choice but chose not to do so.

I was the youngest in my class as I was born at the end of August, so I only missed being in the class below me by 10 days or so. Towards the end of my 8th grade year the varsity football coach approached me and my father about "holding" me back in the 8th grade an extra year. We both politely said no thanks.

Tuscaloosa doesn’t have the flexibility in his schedule to be drunk by 7am on a weekday.

It’s rare for kids to be held back at all. It’s exceedingly rare for kids to be held back for sports, although it does happen. It’s almost unheard of for them to be held back in 8th/9th grade.

Sure, it happens. “Alot” (sic), no. And certainly not in 8th & 9th grade.

Sorry.

In the Sip you only get 4 years of high school eligibility. Because of this 8th grade is the last year you can hold back without losing a year. Don’t know if it’s like that in other states.
My son has a late birthday and one of the youngest in his class. We wanted to hold him back in kindergarten but teachers said he didn’t need it. He’s in 7th now and is gonna hold back this year, but move to a different school. It’s partly for sports but mostly for maturity.

Tuscaloosa is correct, at least in my experience.

For example, I know one family who has multiple boys, all of which play/played in college (at some level). They held them back in kindergarten/elementary, which allowed them to physically mature by the time they hit high school. All the kids got full scholarships.

Contrast this with Robby Ashford at Auburn — he's been "the dude" since middle school, but as far as I know, he was never held back and just now turned 20 (like in October), despite already having three years in college (two at Oregon, one at Auburn). I think one could argue that he would've benefitted from an extra year of maturity.

I've never heard of redshirting in high school.

Thats right. The only times i've ever heard of this is if the kid is young in his class. So they hold them back to allow them time to mature. Not just in athletics.
