Yes, they just haven't invested any of their SEC money into any of their athletic facilities. I honestly have no idea what they're doing with all their money. They only field 16 varsity teams in their athletic department (6 mens sports). They don't even field a men's T&F team or a swimming/diving team. They also have a 6.9 billion dollar endowment. It's kind of a mystery that they've been receiving $45 million a year from the league and haven't done any updates whatsoever with their basketball or football facilities since the early 80s, and their baseball facility upgrades were nominal at best compared to the rest of the league. That school has PLENTY of money to be better than what they are. Their admin just cares very little about their athletic department. They could easily be the Stanford of the South if they chose to be.
All this also means that it'll be hard to ever get a really good coach. Commitment to the program is more than just giving a coach a hefty paycheck; if Vandy doesn't operate that way then I cannot fathom any coaches considering them an upgrade, even from a G5 school. Going to Vandy and struggling to even go .500 isn't going to appeal to many folks.

Seems like they could make some hay by branding themselves as Nashville's college team with a little more investment, like SMU and GT are with their cities
Paul Hoolihan, who was their AD in the early 90s tried that: Nashville's Team. Didn't really work and then when the Titans got there in 1998................

At one time Vandy was the only SEC school where the athletics department had to pay the academic side the full cost of their scholarships. No way they could show a profit doing that. Also, Vandy has a long history of only caring about academics and not athletics. In the 90’s the #1 basketball recruit in the nation was interested in Vandy. He was academically eligible and could go anywhere including Duke. Vandy’s academic side denied him admission. The people who denied him admission said they didn’t know he was a great BB player.

There are far more UT and UK fans/alumni in Nashvegas than Vandy, there just isn't much interest in Vandy athletics in Nashville.....that's the truth of the matter.

More Auburn too. The majority of Vandy's students are not from Tennessee. The ones that are usually are doctors. Drive thru any private school campus and it's all northeastern rich kids driving BMW's and such.

That was another fiasco by Vanderbilt's academic side vs athletics. The player was Ron Mercer from Goodpasture HS north of Nashville proper who had been a teammate of Drew Maddux, one of the few athletic "legacies" at Vandy who's dad played for Vandy and had coached them all growing up,etc and was a FR on Jan van Breda Kolff's team, who himself played with Ray Maddux at Vandy.
Amazingly Vandy's admission people somehow forgot to let VBK know Mercer had been denied, but found time to let the afternoon paper at the time, the Nashville Banner know about who put in on their front page.

Nissan and Saturn brought a lot of Michigan auto workers to Nashville. Go to a Preds game when they play the Red Wings and be amazed.

I mean that's true across the length of the border on both sides. It's all UT and UK. You'll have clusters of other fans in the cities but they're more likely to Auburn, Florida, or Bama than Vandy fans.

Granted, they don't have football, but you've got a lot of Belmont fans who couldn't care less about Vandy

Dan Mullen is really turning out to be the biggest douchebag in the SEC.

There are more Alabama, Ole Miss, and Auburn fans too. Not a small amount of Clemson fans either these days.
