I've seen arguments that their conference payout isn't enough and while I'm sure they get peanuts from their small and almost entirely out of state alumni base, this seems unlikely unless they're just pouring everything into Olympic sports
quote:

The SEC had $720.6 million in total revenue for a fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2019, according to a federal tax return that the conference provided Thursday in response to a request from USA TODAY Sports. That resulted in an average of nearly $45.3 million being distributed to the 13 member schools that received full shares. Mississippi did not get a full share because of its football team was banned from postseason play.

Every SEC team should have pretty nice facilities with the annual payouts

I'd think Vandy's issue would be more to deal with space than the financial capability.

Why would their conference pay-out not be enough to upgrade their facilities?

I've seen arguments like this
quote:

A. That really doesn’t go all that far B. They gotta pay for all the scholarships at VU and that’s expensive there C. Football money covers the Olympic sports which also have high academic costs. D. I think there is certainly some left but I don’t think it’s as big as expected.

Dan Mullen and the Gators refuse to use Vanderbilt’s visiting locker room at half.

Florida also showed up to the stadium late (on purpose), then went through warmups without pads/got dressed at the last second.

If Vandy wanted to they could be one of the best jobs in the SEC. They have more than enough money. Nashville is awesome to recruit to for players and coaches. They just have an administration who doesn’t care.

Yes, they just haven't invested any of their SEC money into any of their athletic facilities. I honestly have no idea what they're doing with all their money. They only field 16 varsity teams in their athletic department (6 mens sports). They don't even field a men's T&F team or a swimming/diving team. They also have a 6.9 billion dollar endowment. It's kind of a mystery that they've been receiving $45 million a year from the league and haven't done any updates whatsoever with their basketball or football facilities since the early 80s, and their baseball facility upgrades were nominal at best compared to the rest of the league. That school has PLENTY of money to be better than what they are. Their admin just cares very little about their athletic department. They could easily be the Stanford of the South if they chose to be.

They do have space issues; however, there is no reason they can't renovate the space they have. It wouldn't make sense to expand anything even if they could, but their football stadium shouldn't be below the level of MTSU in terms of amenities. It is a total shite hole.

I’m thinking that stadium is more right sized than the rest.

After this year will people flock back to stadiums in the same numbers?

Many traditional fans are aging out of live events, it’s such a hassle with travel, parking, ever escalating ticket prices, restrictions on what you can bring to game, time block for game, etc.

I think many have likely found that going to games takes up most of a weekend, and they’ve found other things to do.

I’ll be interested to see IF renewals are impacted by COVID for more than just this season and the next.

Maybe smaller stadiums with comfortable seats and first class amenities is the way forward. I just don’t see people paying big money for aluminum bench with charges for everything.

Vandy's goal is to "Play Like A Girl".....it even said so on at least the kicker's helmet......so no need to upgrade bc they've reached their goal

Oh I highly doubt once fans are allowed to return in force that any SEC school not named Vanderbilt will have a problem filling their stadiums.

Vandy actually made major improvements under Franklin, including their indoor facility.

Facility upgrades tied to his contract.

Penn State on the hook

Penn State having to pay off those improvements should make further upgrades significantly easier.

If the Vanderbilt administration could tear down the football stadium to build a residential college, they would do it without hesitation.

Vanderbilt is a baseball school. Build whatever it takes to keep Corbin happy.

I could be wrong, but I feel like “peak sports” may be in the past.

I’m 56. I grew up playing football and lived for Saturday’s to listen to Auburn football. The game of the week was the only game on TV! Going to Auburn to a game was simple. Drive down. Pull up near stadium. Tailgate. Watch 2.5 hour game. Go home.

Every game is on TV now. Participation rates are way down for football. The hassle factor is significant. The time factor is substantial.

I just don’t see families paying premium prices for an experience that is often not comfortable with noon starts in September or rain, etc.

At the end of the day, maybe you are right, but I gave up my season tickets in 2013 because it just made sense to pick a few games a year to stub hub and have most of my fall weekends free to golf or travel.

keep in mind that one huge thing that came out of Vanderbilt "eliminating" their athletic department in 2003 and placing it in lines with the Engineering School, Arts and Sciences, etc is they can legally use endowment money for sports and they have a ton of it. Corbin got there in 2003 and before he got there HS teams had better facilities and teams than they did.

But to paraphrase Les, do they have "the want."

Seems like they could make some hay by branding themselves as Nashville's college team with a little more investment, like SMU and GT are with their cities. Transplants that don't care about the Vols might be interested if the Titans are sucking at the same time.
