Does Tennessee win the National Title in 1998 without Peyton Manning?

Related topic to the Tennessee title drought thread and it made me think about this. Before anyone says anything yes I know Peyton Manning wasn't the QB for the 1998 Vols football team. I know the one blemish in his otherwise amazing football career was never beating Florida and never getting over the hump to win a National Title in football.
But the other thread got me thinking, does Tennessee win the National Title in 1998 without Peyton Manning going there?
I seriously doubt it. Sure Tennessee recruited well in the 90s with Georgia in the dumpster (Tennessee absolutely raided Georgia during the 90's for players) and Alabama and Auburn being in and out of probation and dealing with various NCAA violations. But I seriously doubt Tennessee gets all of the players they did, including the ones who played a big part on the National Title team. With Peyton Manning being a generation talent at the time that attracted big time recruits to Tennessee.
Like the other thread argued, Tennessee, for all it's tradition, is Ole Miss if they didn't have that 93 - 04 period. Like Ole Miss the vast majority of Tennessee's success, including National Titles and SEC Titles, came pre integration. Tennessee's national titles were in 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967 and 1998. And even with that 1967 is debatable as USC was by and large the consensus National Champion but one poll did give Tennessee the title that year. Without Peyton Manning their lack of recent success could have been used against them.
The good thing is we don't have to worry about that streak ending this year or probably anytime soon.

It's still an interesting question. Do you really think Tennessee gets Peerless Price, Travis Henry, Jamal Lewis, or Travis Stephens on offense without Peyton Manning? I seriously doubt it, at least not all of them. And it would be hard to see them winning the National Title that year without some of those players.

For an entire season that was the luckiest team I’ve ever seen. People remember Stoerner’s fumble and forget they played against a backup QB in the NC game.

Price maybe not. But the three running backs coming in knew they were at most getting one season with Peyton and knew Tee Martin would be the guy handing the ball off to them. All three knew UT was dead last in the SEC in rushing in 96 and all came in thinking they would get significant playing time. Who the QB was didn’t matter.

We certainly had the bounces go our way. But to be fair, your Gators had a chance to keep that backup QB out of the championship game…and you failed.
And it wasn’t the Vols fault that both UCLA and Kansas State choked away their chance to get there.

Yes, they were cheating their arse off back then.
