+1

Honestly, I bitched some about the offense but I knew that he knew what he was doing and he won. Him leaving caught me off guard and I was very upset.

Bama fans did not bitch about him. He and the AD at the time did not get along. He left because of this dumbass AD that Bama had. The fans have always loved and respected Coach Stallings. He's at the Bama games quite often. In fact, he has been on the Quad signing autographs several times. I got my picture taken with him. A very nice approachable man.

You as a hated rival fan needs to quite worrying about our National Championship coaches and go back to kissing Chizik's butt.

frick off moron. I was trying to be nice dumbass gump.

And I am correct. Bama fans bitched about Stallings A LOT, I remember it very well. 1000x more than they do about Saban. And like I said, I am aware bama fans love him now. I even said I like and respect him a lot also.

I wish he would go to A-Day. I've, unfortunately, never gotten the chance to meet him

Plus I want an autographed pic to add to my others

I really don't remember hearing major complaints until the one point loss to Florida in 1994 (not going for two). I don't think the majority of fans wanted him to leave, but some people in the athletic department must have pressured him to leave.

I'm a big Stallings fan, but there's a story he loves to tell about his son John Mark (who had Down's Syndrome and recently passed away, was considered one of the biggest Alabama fans in the world).

Apparently, sometime during Saban's first year, Stallings walked into John Mark's room to find him lying on his bed watching the tape of the '92 National Championship game. Stallings, looking at himself on the screen said "Johnny, who is your all-time favorite Alabama football coach?"

Without missing a beat, John Mark said "Nick Saban".

I blame Stallings (and Barker) for Alabama fans liking McElroy so much. If this was any other fanbase, they would have been much harder on him.

yeah what's to like about a couple of quarterbacks who have gone 14-0 and 35-2-1 respectively?

yeah, not going for 2 was inexcuasable. I bitched about the 91 Florida game too just becuase the team looked so ill prepared (Stallings must have bitched too because Alabama won their next 29 games and were undefeated in their next 32.

I love Coach Stallings. I've had the pleasure of talking to him several times at my mom's company's retreat. I've even got a photo with him when I was a kid and another later on as a teenager.

it was SHULA.. because he was the current coach at the time. i think the story was a little before he died, so during shula's time. but that PROVES how devoted Mark was to Alabama.

Too bad the coach he referred to doesn't share that devotion.

No, it was definitely Saban. I just read it a year or so ago. John Mark died in August of 2008, FWIW.

BTW, it's referenced in this column...

No, every place I read says it was Nick Saban.

Everyone who knew Johnny knew how much he loved Alabama football, and his love didn’t fade after his father retired. Gene Stallings loves to tell the story of asking his son to name his favorite Alabama coach, and hearing him answer, without skipping a beat, "Nick Saban."

compared to Saban? I know he's no longer involved (or atleast I imagine), but I just wondered if UA fans are as proud of him as you are of Saban.
by the way, he always seemed like a good guy.

No, some gumps went after him when he was critical of Saban last year.

Well, Coach Stallings and Coach Saban will just have to kiss and make up, because their statues will be side by side from now on.

They need to kiss and make up. They're going to be standing next to each other on the Walk of Champions for damned near eternity.

I love Coach Stallings and I hated that he left the way he did. He did hold back the offense but you only have to win by one point so I didn't complain too much,

not reading this thread all the wat through either, but I really liked - like Stallings. He was a solid coach, man and above all, father.
