I just hope that it’s an open competition and if the guy who wins it chokes against FSU, he gets pulled and let the next guy play. The Bama qb room is in as good of shape as most of college football. I wouldn’t talk shite about any team’s position status, everything will change after another round of the portal.

Here’s the weird part of the QB situation:

Year that Saban left I was at the closed door scrimmage. Buchner walks right down the field and scores. Looked easy for him. Milroe looked kind of meh, Simpson kind of the same.

Milroe starts, gets pulled at USF, Buchner stinks up the place. No clue.

Next year, no Saban, closed door scrimmage. Simpson looks better than Milroe, and it wasn’t that close. Milroe starts, we think we are ok, tailspin, Simpson never sniffs the field.

With that said it looked like we knew what we had, we didn’t. Then we think we have something and we don’t.

Milroe just left. Bama can only go up from there.

Two 5 stars, including Keelon Russell, who was the #2 ranked player in the nation according to On3 and 247, and one 4 star. All inexperienced so who knows. Nearly has to be better than Jalen Milroe.

I know several people who were at that scrimmage who said the same thing. Simpson was waaaaay better than Milroe and it wasn't even close. A lot of head scratching things have gone on the past two years at the Capstone.

I know one of the WR's who transferred after this season and he felt like Simpson should have been the starter this season. I talked to him and his dad several weeks ago.

On the flip side, a lot of practice observers the last 2 years have said that Lonergan appeared to be the best passing qb on the roster. I hated to see him depart but with the lack of opportunity so far, it's certainly understandable. Eli Holstein was the 4th string qb at Alabama, and he played well at Pitt last season.

I think the reason he didn't get more "attention" was he was doing it against backups and not the starters. Whereas Simpson was getting reps against the 1's and still doing quite well. But I'm just glad Milroe is gone and we can hopefully get to running a more traditional offense.

When the feeding frenzy was gobbling up BAMA players, when Coach Saban finally hung them up, Teams were coming hard for Ty Simpson. And they readily came from all over the SEC. That was by far my greatest concern. I never felt like Milroe was going anywhere, but Ty was a flight risk in my eyes at the time, simply because of playing time and dollars were being flashed.

Dylan Lonergan was a loss, but he was always leaving, just bad timing. But Ty stuck it out and he's getting first, second, and third look. Russell starting as a TF is problematic with so much experience in front of him. As a TF, Jalen Hurts did it for most of 2016 but was fighting it out with a RF in Blake Barnett, who also had zero starts.

These days, BAMA's depth at QB looks as good as any team I can think of. I truly appreciate Ty for taking it on the chin and pulling a Mac Jones. Very, very rare.

I wasn't butthurt, boog. You spend a lot of time worrying about Alabama. Maybe you should be questioning the talent level at Auburn and coaching ability of Coach Freeze?
Also, change your avatar. You're not fooling anyone.

Ty received 600K in NIL to be the 2nd team QB at Bama. AU tried hard to get him.

Come on, man. You didn't say he was overhyped when he was signing with Alabama.

I don't buy into the hype until I see them on the field. We've been burned so many times by so-called 5 stars. Especially at the QB position. I was going by measurables, level of HS ball he played in. Guys always look great in their HS highlight video.
Recruiting services are shite. They hype up these guys now that are so over-rated.
I'm not sold on Keelon Russell although he did play in a large HS league in Texas.

The last 2 were Tua snd Bryce Young, who were among the best quarterbacks ever at Alabama

I like Austin Mack. The kid's a legit 6'6".

Me too, and after some of Milroe's struggles in '23 I actually sort of thought there was a possibility that Mack might work his way into the rotation partway through this year, because he seems like a perfect fit for KB's concepts.

But I watched him pretty closely at some scrimmages, and oof... he is just not ready, man. IDK what his deal is, but there's a reason he never came in at any meaningful point (at least imho).

Hopefully he improves or otherwise gets his mojo going, because I'd love to see him compete.

Yeah that's a great point. I think those guys were true 5 *. Both had a long list of suitors. I don't recall them being 3* or 4* and then getting a Bama bump extra star like some of the other guys.
For every Tua and Bryce there's a Phillips Sims, Cooper Bateman and the kid from California, I can't even remember his name but he had a weird throwing motion.
Anyway, Bryce and Tua were great.

Why would DeBoer play an obvious misfit for his system over a better fit who also plays better?

That makes no sense, especially if other players think the alternative was better as well.

Here's how I understand it:

-Shortly after the bowl game multiple players lined up outside of Saban's office to talk about how much money they could get in a new NIL offer.
-Shortly after that Saban announced his retirement.
- Players started hitting the portal.
-Deboer was hired.
-Milroe, say you what you want about his QB skills but he's a great politican. Heshowed up in DeBoer's office and said all the right things. He was 100% comitted to supporting DeBoer and he promised to talk with the current guys on the roster and help the coaches keep the roster intact.
- Behind the scenes (in the locker-room) key players, OL in particular, were 110% committed to Jalen Milroe being the starting QB. He was their guy and he had their backs and they his.
- Demote Milroe and watch the revolt and the transfer portal lighting up.
- Many don't know this, including Bama fans, Ty SImpson has a 600K NIL to stay on the roster in Tuscaloosa as the backup QB, up until now. Word was AU came looking and Hugh Freeze wanted Ty on the AU roster. Bama stepped up Ty's NIL deal.
