Discussion Thread for McClover/Keys allegations and purported HBO story

Strictly rumor at this point, let's see if it develops. Again, not confirmed. Only rumor.
Word is that HBO's Real Sports is in a "finding out" period regarding a story about cheating in the SEC. Not skirting the rules, not coloring outside the lines, not violating the letter of the law . . . flat-out, blatant, worse-its-ever been cheating.
Specifically: former Auburn defensive end Stanley McClover allegedly has admitted that he received cash payments to attend Auburn and that the payments continued during his four years on the Plains.
Former LSU recruit and Alabama player Chris Keys is also allegedly willing to appear on Real Sports saying he received the same benefits as McClover.

There are other names and other schools involved, but the entire story is SEC-based. Also, because all of the players who (potentially) are going on the record have been gone for at least five years, apparently the NCAA can't open an investigation into any of the alleged improper benefits the players say they received.

There also could be a tape of Cecil Newton and Kenny Rogers that, if what Rogers is saying on it is true, could be very damaging to Mississippi State

I wonder what the point of calling an ex-Bama player a former LSU recruit is? If he was good enough to play in at Bama he was probably recruited by 20 or 30 big time programs.

About as funny if our basketball team got caught cheating within the last couple years.

This is really starting to be more like let's take down the SEC conspiracy. Where did Gumble go to school?

He was committed to LSU before switching to Bama.

Good thing the 5 years is up.
The 5 year window can be expanded by the ncaa if a pattern of abuse is uncovered.
So don't think you are clear because the "statue of limitations" is up. This goes for anybody...

For Bama's sake, they better hope not. They were on probation during Keys recruitment and are on probation now.

Wasn't Keys the one who did something crazy like broke his leg or arm in a fight with somebody else on the team?

Not saying AU or any other school has done anything wrong, but the NCAA SOLs are not concrete and they have exceptions built in:
LINK
quote:
32.6.3 Statute of Limitations. Allegations included in a notice of allegations shall be limited to possible
violations occurring not earlier than four years before the date the notice of inquiry is forwarded to the institution
or the date the institution notifies (or, if earlier, should have notified) the enforcement staff of its inquiries into
the matter. However, the following shall not be subject to the four-year limitation: (Revised: 10/12/94, 4/24/03)
(a) Allegations involving violations affecting the eligibility of a current student-athlete;
(b) Allegations in a case in which information is developed to indicate a pattern of willful violations on the part
of the institution or individual involved, which began before but continued into the four-year period; and
(c) Allegations that indicate a blatant disregard for the Association’s fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic
or ethical-conduct regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the occurrence of the violation. In
such cases, the enforcement staff shall have a one-year period after the date information concerning the matter
becomes available to the NCAA to investigate and submit to the institution a notice of allegations concerning
the matter.
