Everybody knows about Mississippi State's legendary SEC Championship season of 1941, but what a lot of people don't know is their 1940 team was actually better.

The 1940 Mississippi State College Maroons went 10-0-1 (4-0-1), but lost the SEC Championship to Tennessee who went 10-1 (5-0)

State tied with AUBURN 7-7 in week 3 at Legion Field in Birmingham.
But State finished the season strong with a 13-0 win over Bama ( highlights), and a 14-7 win over Georgetown in the Orange Bowl ( highlights)

Meanwhile Tennessee started 10-0 but flopped with a loss in the Sugar Bowl to Boston College.

One more point vs Auburn and Mississippi State would've been 11-0 and been one of 4 teams that year to finish with a perfect record and have a legit claim to the MNC. #1 in the AP was Minnesota, undefeated Stanford won the Rose Bowl, and undefeated Boston College beat previously undefeated Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl.

I like to think that my Pawpaw, who would've been 12 at the time and grew up in Birmingham, was at that game to witness what must have been the origin for State's hate for Auburn. It brings a year to my eye, he went on to graduate from Auburn in the c/o 52 on the GI Bill, and was a letterman in tennis and golf (FAF)

RIP Pawpaw frick you State

I'm glad Auburn has some history books. They just aren't presidential thus they are clearly communists

Probably not, but Auburn did launch Mississippi State to its first #1 ranking ever.

Complete and utter BS. Everybody knows bama won the National Championship in 1941 despite finishing behind MSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and UGA in the final rankings. Just ask them.

Weren't the titles awarded prior to the bowl games back then?

Yes so maybe it would've been 5 teams claiming to be National Champs that year since Tennessee was 10-0 in the regular season and still claims that year. But State fans would have always had the one-up over Tennessee fans of actually winning the bowl game and finishing perfect whenever the subject came up in discussion

A quality troll BJ. Quality.

I've been worried, you haven't had the same zest you usually have this time of the season. Now I see you were just pacing yourself for a long season.

Remind me. How did y'all get Leo Lewis to commit to State over Ole Miss?

First, it's easy to choose anything over ole mess, but beyond that...after he was given a duffle bag full of cash at rebel rags, we asked him if he really wanted to be on a team destined for probation. He asked if he should accept the hooker sent to him by y'all, we suggested he double wrap.

The choice was obvious then.

We got him to sign a service contract.

You know, instead of just giving him $10K to NOT play for us

Honestly if Cam decides to go to State as opposed to AU they would've won at least 11 games so that's more of a steal than 1941

We just asked him if he wanted to play for us.
