The administration screwed that up as much as anything in their representation of the severity of things to Fran. Relations grew very cold after the bomb dropped, and reality of the situation hit home.

People have always read him wrong. He was mislead by Bama brass on how severe the 2002 sanctions were gonna be. When Bama got basically the death penalty he decided to leave. Bama wasn’t gonna be able to compete from 03 until about 07 or 08 and he, and I don’t blame him, didn’t want the years he would have to endure there. Mike Shula wasn’t the coach because Bama thought he was the best choice. I’ve always gave kudos to Fran for just taking the heat instead of telling what really happened.
