LSU defense will be good. Chavis is a great coach he just can't stop Flordia. But not many can. Bama defense will be stout.

I think think they'll be solid, FWIW. But as the 9th ranked SEC defense last year, I think there should be more evidence as to why LSU's D will be one of the best units in 09.

Rahim Alem/Al Jones is a good pass rusher and Chavis is a proven DC (I've already provided more supporting details than anyone else in this thread).

What other players makes LSU's defense scary?

Our own defense scares me.

They were pretty awful last year for the most part. Spring showed a lot more aggressiveness and quickness. Any improvement and I'll be happy. With a slightly better defense, last season we'd have won 3 more games.

i could sit here and give you excuses for days but rather i'll just say the talent is there all we needed was direction.. we've found that and i expect the D to be right back on top where they belong, unfortunately Florida is every bit as talented and arent trying to fit in a new system, thats why they're at 1.. between us and Bama i think it can go either way but im an LSU fan so of course im gonna put them on top.. i could understand Bama fans feeling like they have the better defense though.. Ole Miss doesnt scare me in the least bit..

The LSU rush defense was strong last year. GA Tech played right into your co-def coordinators hands because they had no passing game. Tyson Jackson (although a meh pass rusher) was a good run-stuffing DE and now he's gone.

Balanced teams victimized your back seven in 08 - it remains a huge question mark w/ or w/o Chavis.

Chavis will help, but the progression of your CBs and safeties will be key to your 09 defense.

I'm not counting them out- I actually picked them as the 4th best defense in the SEC if someone in your secondary steps it up.

Huh? LSU's secondary will be one of the best in the SEC this year. Talent wasn't the issue last year, it was the co-coordinators and their min-maxing, constant shuttling in and out of the players. The defense was never all on the same page and it showed. Our opponents won't be able to count on that this year.

As an aside, the untold story of LSU's blowout of Georgia Tech was that Les Miles hired Larry Lacewell as a defensive consultant on how to stop the wishbone offense.

The answer to stopping the wishbone was simple. Lacewell had the LSU scout team run the wishbone offense without the ball. LSU's defenders were taught to stay with their man no matter what.

The result was a team that had scored more points on Georgia less than a month earlier than LSU had managed to was held to three points.

I bring this up to illustrate what the same LSU defensive players that looked so bad all of the 2008 regular season are capable of with sound coaching.

That Dline will be pretty formidable. That's ok though. Just throw it over their heads at one of the worst secondaries in the conference.

Ask Georgia Tech how 'average' they were.

Why would anyone ask them? If you can't stop a Georgia Tech team that only runs the ball (not even a freaking threat of a pass) with a month of preparation, your defense is truly awful.

Funny, this sounds a lot like Vanderbilt. How'd that turn out?

I don't say this to be mean or flippant. Just that what you say is harder to actually accomplish on the field than you make it out to be.

I repeat: GT scored more points on UGA than LSU did, and LSU was the 4th highest scoring offense in the SEC last year. What the LSU defense accomplished against GT in the bowl win was impressive.

But was even more impressive to me was how good LSU's defense looked against LSU's offense in spring. An offense that was #4 in the SEC last year and with almost everyone back was held scoreless through most of the spring.

LSU's offense didn't score against LSU's #1 defense until the coaching staff started the offense on the 50 yard line the last practice before the spring game.

I put Florida, Bama, and LSU in the top 3 because well you know what you gonna get with Florida and Bama, but LSU would have had a good D last year if it werent for coaching. GA I put them 8th just because of Martinez. Auburn will always have a good D no matter what and Ole Miss im not sold on their pass defense.

Patrick Peterson- Stud CB, he's gonna be very good

Chad Jones - Playing his natural position this year for the first time, we'll see if he's overrated

Josh Downs

Harry Coleman-Was it Coleman who moved to LB this year? I think he did. Chavis can coach LBs.

Ryan Baker- stud on Special Teams, but this is more of an unknown

Kelvin Sheppard -See my Chavis comment above

Jai Eugene - he better step up big this year. Hopefully Cooper can coach him up. Really an unknown

Barkevious Mingo - Freshman, ehhhh, Don't know if he's gonna play alot.

Chris Davenport - Freshman, he might play a little too, but I don't know if he's gonna have a huge impact this year

Perry Riley - Chavis comment again

Drake Nevis - this guy is gonna suprise some people this year. Reminds me ALOT of Dorsey without the injuries.

Charles Alexander - hopefully Brick gets him motivated his senior year

Chase Clement -RSFR - hope he plays up to his potential. Very quick, but an unknown.

You also may want to add Ron Brooks. Thought I read where he was playing DB now, and looking pretty good. Maybe I am thinking of the Taylor kid that was looking good at DB.

Anyway, LSU has the athletes to be VERY dangerous this year, but ALOT falls on the coaching staff, and how well these kids are being coached. I guess we'll get a small idea in Washington.
