I’m sure Bear had great classes in 80/81

Actually the decline of the program in the early 1980s was pretty directly related to recruiting dropping. The last Bryant teams and the first Perkins teams were not nearly as talented as the Bryant teams of the 1970s. Perkins had to come in and really rev up and modernize the recruiting operation, did a pretty good job and then left for the NFL just as the fruits of his labors started to show up. Bill Curry went 19-5 in 1988 and 1989 on the backs of Perkins last few classes.

Just take a look at the NFL drafts of the early/mid 1980s.

1982 - 3 picks (3rd round, 8th round, 9th round)
1983 - 4 picks (1st round, 3rd round, 5th round, 12th round)
1984 - 3 picks (4th round, 7th round, supp round)

Just wasn't any talent there - especially compared to the drafts from 1970-1980.

Tuscaloosa News sports guys did a pretty good in-depth podcast on it this Summer in their Bryant to Saban series that basically did a deep dive on the era between the coaches. Interesting to us, anyway. I wouldn't expect it to be interesting to fans of other schools .

Well you can at least tell which LSU fans are still concerned that Bamas run isn’t completely over. They certainly ran to this thread to discount it.

This class may REALLY move A1abana forward.

I could see them skyrocketing all the way into the Top 10 next year. Look out!

You were giving us unrealistic expectations so you could laugh at us when we didn't achieve them

I’m sure nobody said that at the time

There was no rivals or 24/7 back then so hard to do an apples to apples comparison, but you know as well as I do that how classes are thought of coming in don’t necessarily correlate to how many players are drafted into the NFL

It will be interesting to see your reaction to the detailed stats I post on the age coaching legends start slipping.

Again - I rely on what I read and listen to, so it certainly can be recency bias, but according to Cecil and the others who discussed the era (as well as my dad and others) they were clearly missing on the best players in the state. And they weren't signing the same great players from Tennessee and Florida they had before.

I'm sure people fans and media folks were whistling past the graveyard, but the folks who followed recruiting locally and regionally knew they were losing kids to Auburn and Tennessee that they didn't use to lose to them. And Cecil made it pretty clear Bryant knew he was losing those battles and it was a big part of why he decided he couldn't do it anymore.

Long story short, while we could also be in 1980 Alabama territory, I think our current recruiting is still pretty much the norm of what it has been the last 4-5 years since Kirby left. JMHO.
