RPI is the devil

RPI is all about playing a lot of solid RPI teams, not necessarily just a few games against top rated teams. Of our 11 games 8 were against top 100 RPI teams. Just taking a quick look at Florida's schedule, it looks like they've played two really good teams, a solid team in A&M, and then not much else. Our OOC SOS is 14; Florida's is 172.
I hate the RPI fwiw. But it's just a game, you have to manipulate the schedule. Not that it will really matter to Florida (except for seeding), they're a lock and their RPI should be pretty good at the end of the year.
This is true. People dogged Alabama's pre-conference schedule last year but it was like Florida's this year in that we played a couple of very good teams but even some of the big name teams on the schedule were awful and therefore our pre-conference SOS and RPI last year was awful.
Here's the Pomeroy power rankings which are respected a make a bit more sense:

#2 Kentucky
#9 Florida

I think that the RPI needs to be taken out of the formula for determining NCAA tournament teams. It was a system developed in the 80's and it is clearly showing its age now with all of the modern systems of analytics available.
My biggest problem with the system is that it does not tell you how good a team actually is, because it doesn't take margin of victory into account. Why should a 1 point victory at home over an awful team be worth the same as a 10 point win on the road over a good team? Sure, each win is only worth one win, but it does not tell you how well a team played.
Here's how the PRI is calculated. Only 25 percent of the formula comes from how you perform. 50 percent comes from your opponents records. And the final 25 percent comes from your opponents opponents' records. So a very bad team could have a great RPI because of the actions of their opponents, and not because of their skill level. This is another major problem with the RPI the good can be rewarded for playing the bad and vice-versa. So the best team in the country isn't the best because its opponents arn't the best? That seems pretty unfair to me.
In short death to the RPI!

If you're talking about the KenPom ratings about the same, it looks at how you played, not if you won or lost.

Akron is apparently at #144 in the RPI. They've lost to a couple in the 130-150 range and played one that is at 340ish. That hurts you.
Kansas losing today to Davidson will ding UK, but not too much because Davidson was at #55 in the RPI.

Southern Miss somehow has a RPI of 4. Their biggest wins are Ole Miss and New Mexico State and lost to Murray State and Denver.

But keep in mind their RPI also comes from who those teams have played too.

I'm guessing you are using the CBS RPI?

the conference average is not great. therefore the teams hoping to get into the NCAA tournament are not going to get better RPI's during the SEC season. what you see is what you WILL get.

It's not a number, it just says really bad next to us.

The RPI is calculated with 25% your winning percentage, 50% your opponent's winning percentage, and 25% of your opponent's opponent's winning percentage

I agree 100%
That is why I enjoy the KenPom ratings so much, it tells you exactly how well you are performing at any given time.

As "retarded" as it is, it makes the BCS look terrible by comparison.

RPI usually works out pretty well by the end of the season.
