If you had a kid or grandkid competing, you'd feel differently.

Yeah, I dare you to say that and run with those Kenyans who hafta train with lions, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, and all those other critters waiting to pounce on them.

I respect and envy distance runners.Even when I was in the best shape of my life I just never had hand the lungs for it.They talk about second wind,I barely had a first wind.

I could sprint and jump, but forget running a long way.

I was deadly at marbles and mumblety-peg as a kid.

Sport or not, if it doesn’t really involve much skill, it just ain’t gonna be a crowd pleaser. Which is why golf, NASCAR, and even bowling, despite involving little athleticism, will always have a fan base a billion times larger. Okay maybe not bowling. But it’s still markedly larger than cross country. It actually merits tv coverage. When’s the last time you found yourself flipping through the dial and settling on a good jog? It’s obviously an athletic event but it’s disingenuous to act like anyone truly gives a shite. As a rule, people like to watch other people with great skill. Not simply great athleticism. Combine both and you have a massive following. Do something well that people don’t like doing in the first place? Not so much.

*cue the “breathing techniques, how you hold your thumbs and not slipping in the mud are skills” apologists*

The biggest surprise in this thread is that we are 4 pages in and not a single person has quoted Kenny Powers.

If you're a cross country dude what are you even going to do?

Break your arm on his forehead? Run to tell the cops in person?

My son ran XC and, while I admired his efforts and was pleased that he did it, the meets were boring AF.

The OP is correct... it's not a real sport. For some fans like those UK, a1abama, Tenn, USCe and others I'll just skip... cross country is their trip to Walmart to make groceries.
