Among adults aged 18 or older, the national rate of SMI was 4.0 percent, which equates to 9.3 million Americans. Among individual States, the percentage of adults aged 18 or older with SMI ranged from 3.1 percent in New Jersey to 5.5 percent in West Virginia (Figure 1, Table 1). Among States, AMI rates ranged from 14.7 percent in New Jersey to 22.4 percent in Utah (Figure 2, Table 2).
