Rees can get a better gig if he waits.

Or he could be not very good at Alabama and never get a P5 offer. It's a risk/reward thing. There are no guarantees. If I'm 31 and a P5 school offers me $4-5 million for 5 years, that's going to be tough to turn down

what Saban assistant with zero HC experience has vaulted themselves stright from Alabama to a top P5 job?

Bobby Williams is the only other. Took over at Michigan State after Saban left.

Lots of rehab guys that got another chance. Or those that left for coordinator spots and quickly took over as head coaches at those schools (Cristobal at Oregon and Brent Key at Georgia Tech). And several that left for smaller head coaching jobs and quickly got a P5 gig.

Right, because, in fairness, most big P5 schools don't typically hire guys with no HC experience prior. It happens, sure, but it isn't common, not anymore at least. Most coaches generally bust their chops at a G5 or a smaller P5 for a couple of seasons before taking over a big program with high expectations. Honestly, I think jobs like Northwestern, Duke, etc are awesome jobs. They pay plenty and have tempered expectations which equals better job security. Fitzgerald is a perfect example (his recent issues not withstanding). Guy won 4 games over 2 years, barely had a .500 record over 17 years, and kept his job.

How the hell is this fiction?

Sans Golding and Applewhite, who hasn’t eventually been hired as a head coach?

That wasn't the statement.

The statement was:
quote:

an elite program that puts their coordinators, one after the other, into excellent HC positions within a year, or two.

Can you even name two people that fit the statement?

He already was OC at a top program in Notre dame and now he can get some HC experience at a P5 program instead of staying on a sinking ship with a senile coach who is declining fast

Plus he could live in an upscale suburb north of Chicago or live in a boring crime ridden satellite city of crime ridden Birmingham in a state with the highest rates of obesity, poverty, and illiteracy

It’s a no brainer

A coordinator that got a power 5 head coaching job after 1-2 seasons?

Jeremy Pruitt - DC in 2016-17 - HC at Tennessee
Steve Sarkisian - OC in 2019-20 - HC at Texas

I’ll also add

Mike Locksley - OC 2018 - HC Maryland

That one may be most impressive considering his past.

And that's pretty much it.

Yet the post said Alabama is doing it "one after another."

Sark had 2 prior P5 head coaching jobs. His ability to coach was never a question. His sobriety was

Comparing his situation to a 31 year old Tommy Rees is silly

Why would you be so pedantic over such an innocuous post?

Clearly several Alabama coordinators have moved on to head coaching positions.

I have to agree with the Bama folks, seems like a bad career move for Rees if he took the NW job. But, you never know for certain if/when another Power 5 job would be offered. But if Northwestern offered him twice his salary, he would have to consider.

No one is comparing the situations. Sidewalk is being pedantic about a simple observation on the likelihood of Alabama coordinators getting head coaching opportunities.

Clearly.

So why do Alabama fans have to exaggerate it?

None of this is true.

Depends on if you take the words "year, or two" literally - but it's pretty close to spot on.

Jim McElwain landed at Florida, Lane Kiffin is now at Ole Miss, and Steve Sarkisian is the head coach of Texas. And then you have coordinators like Jimbo Fisher (Florida State & Texas A&M) who worked for him prior to coming to Alabama.

And let's not forget Nick Saban's longtime defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart, who is at present the head coach of Georgia.

NW seems to be okay with mediocrity. You never know.
