That's actually a fair enough response - but there are always exceptions to the rule. I would note that interview questions are part of a process that forces them to be a public speaker, be up on current events, and to think quickly on your feet. Not everyone accomplishes this on the first or second try! And note that as a "teen", she would have been probably a high school underclassman, maybe 15-16 years old.
But overall, they generally get there. These girls usually compete for several pageants before everything starts to click and they get the process down pat. Contestants who apply themselves usually come out of the system knowing how to interview, speak in public, think quickly, have poise and presence, be up on politics and civics, will have met some important business leaders in the state, etc.
In fact, I'd recommend that parents with daughters look into the Miss America system for those very reasons. It seems a bit counter intuitive but the Miss America program (I am not as familiar with the Miss USA system) turns out to be a great preparation for college and the workforce as they mature and get ready to leave home.
But that's just my opinion. The Miss America pageant system is not as ordinary or as shallow as many people might think. Some pageants certainly are.
