This.

Plus, the rest of the country always says "We hate the SEC" .. Not "We hate LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Florida." They hate us collectively as a conference. Might as well return the hatred/domination as a unified front.

Add in that the continued domination of the conference only makes the rest of us better and ranked better, and I see no reason NOT to have conference pride..

Yep, all the other conferences hate us. So I love it when anyone in our conference whips up on an OOC, especially Ohio State and USC!

Because so many SEC teams have won that other conferences hate the SEC and say the SEC is overrated.

And each one of us takes it personally when they don't give our team respect. And since our team is part of the SEC, and they say the SEC sucks, they are essentially saying our team sucks.

So frick them, that's why.

I don't buy the Civil War theory at all. People don't realize how hard it is to win in the SEC because there are so many good teams. And when they trash the SEC saying the teams are overrated, that pisses us off. So we want to stick it to the rest of the country as a conference. So the rest of the country has brought this conference pride on themselves.

There is mutual respect when an SEC team makes it to the NC, because we all know how it is to make it through the gauntlet that is the SEC.

And so when other people around the country basically say the conference isn't any good, so there is no "gauntlet", it pisses us off and makes us happy when the SEC teams prove them wrong.

I actually think it has more to do with regional pride. The rest of the nation still views the Southeast as backwards, stupid, and poor. Whenever Southerner whips a yankee at anything, we'll rejoice.

bingo, and whenever Yankees beat the South at something it proves "they're superior like they thought all along"

The conference was overlooked and shafted for a long time. I think it culminated with the undefeated Auburn team sitting on the sidelines during the National Championship game while two teams with far inferior resumes played to see who was second best.

This! That's why I cheer for the conference. It benefits us all. Auburn got fricked that yr. I really think that slap in the face is what really started it. I don't remember it much before that.

For better or worse, as far as the south is concerned, it has always been us against the rest of the country, and we relish when one of our brethren sticks it to the fricking Yankees.

The south is unique. It is a distinct culture within a nation that seems to strive for homogeneity. Everyone wants to look, act, and sound the same...except the south. You have American cuisine...and southern cuisine. There is the American culture...and the southern culture.

Football is a politically correct venue where we can still express how proud we are to be from the south. It encapsulates everything that is great about being from the south: the pageantry, the food, the people, the physical prowess, even the opportunity for the genteel and nouveau riche to wear their Sunday best to a gala without being labeled as "old-fashoined." Until recently, it was one of the few remaining venues you could see a confederate battle flag flying or hear Dixie. Maybe it's all we have left. Maybe it's the last vestiges of our ideal, if not our accurate, culture and history.

As part of the southeastern conference, we share all of those things. We are closer to each other than anyone else. Maybe that is why there is such solidarity in the conference.

I don't get the conference pride crap. Why in the hell would I want Bama, Texas A&M or Arkansas winning a national title. frick THAT!!!! As you can tell those are the teams in the SEC that I hate the most!!! I hope Bama get busted for recruiting violations.

ETA: I'm coming from a coach and booster point of view. I pump money into the LSU athletic Dept. We are competing with Bama, aTm, Arkansas, Auburn, etc for recruits. Why in the hell do I want them winning a national title to use that in recruiting "Come over here, we won 3 BCS Championships in 4 yrs, while LSU haven't won one in over 4yrs." "look at these rings, you can have one too when we WIN ANOTHER one at Bama." Get the point. I doubt if the football coaches and coaching staff at your favorite school want their rivals winning BCS championships.

Conference pride is for the losers who are so deseperate to attach themselves to something on top that they don't even care if it's their own team and will even root for their rivals to make themselves feel better. Pathetic.

Thank you. Yeah I like it when they win regular bowl games, don't want them winning national titles. Screw that. Go win the Sugar, Cotton, Peach, Citrus, Weedeater bowl all you want, I don't want you winning a BCS title. That does nothing for LSU when we're fighting for the same recruits in Louisiana, Texas, Bama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, etc.

I actually believe it is rooted in the civil war. The South banded together to fight the rest of the nation. I truly believe that notion is engrained in the southern culture. My 2 cents.

One of the main reasons I cheer for the conference is it makes the overall brand stronger when TV Negotiations are being worked on. Why people would hope that the conference loses or does badly I dont understand. It helps everybody in the end in the respect and dollars categories.
