College athletes getting paid

I had a high school friend that was getting recruited by an SEC school for football, when he took his official visit to that school the star player at that time told him that the university bought him a brand new car. From that point on I knew that money was a big tool used to recruit high school athletes, with that being said I wonder how has college football avoided the investigations that college basketball is currently having. Especially Alabama, I know they gotta be throwing hundreds of thousands to top recruits

So does LSU and every other P5 school.

I know someone that went to an OVC school for basketball. He told me his reason for going so far away was because they gave him the most free stuff. It happens in all of the NCAA. It's just how much.

Anyone else more surprised that OP has a friend than that there is an SEC school cheating?

That's not how any of this works. The university doesn't buy the cars. That leaves a paper trail.

A car payment is cheap, which is why everybody hands them out, but there aren't a lot of Cam Newtons around to command the kind of money you're talking about. It's safe to say only the truly elite are worth that.
Most players don't get much of anything more than freebies in the local stores. Food, car accessories, shoes, etc.
Also, you seem very niave to have believed players don't get paid.

This. A OL/DL get the same meal plan as a WR/DB... despite a 150 pound weight difference. Most college towns have hot spots...restaurants, bars, clothing outfitters, etc where players don’t spend a dime over 3-4 years.
It’s usually local, in state boosters/ fans than set up cars or small time “investments”...in football. Basketball not included.

Why do people think this is uncommon? Every school does this shite...Yes, yours too.
Friends of the programs hand these out, keeping it away from school officials. Even if a coach told a booster to stay away, u couldn't keep the kid from the booster and therefore it will NEVER go away. SMU was a little different in that they organized the money to flow through the board of trustees which was stupid.
But again, every school is passing out shite. Every one. The coaches just aren't "aware".

Yea,I love how 99% of post like this NEVER name the alleged school or athlete. At the very minimum they need to name the offending school.

I know it doesn’t happen to every D-1 kid. I know several that went to SEC schools that didn’t benefit at all. However they all came from middle to upper class family’s. I know one kid who’s father got a job with a school, to keep the family close, but the salary was a cut. Kids from lower income households tend to get more perks, and I’m fine with that. As long as they stay in state and play for a team that rhymes with mulehawgs.

There is some truth in this. I think the poor kids get more help. Certainly more cars. A guy like Trevor Lawrence this year probably could have named his price, but I think the family is relatively well off. They might not have even had their hand out.

I would like to see proof from any school including LSU. If that is happening them LSU is not paying enough because they are constantly losing players and games to the other school.

We all know you didn't have any friends in high school

I had a friend who was a top recruit out of high school. He came from nothing. He was an orphan, lived in a trailer with a foster dad, and like 5 other kids. He could barely afford clothes but some how after he signed with a D1 school he shows up in a Cadillac Escalade? After that I always knew colleges paid
