all the coaches of that era were mean as motherfrickers. Bryant, Paterno, Bowden, you name him and he was mean as shite and one of the meanest of all they say was Lou Holtz.
I don't know how mean they were on the field, but I met Bowden a couple of times and talked to several people who knew him well. He was a genuinely good dude.
Holtz on the other hand seems nice on camera. However, I know dozens of people who know him personally or worked with him (including my wife), and I've never heard any of them say anything nice about him.
I've heard stories of Bryant doing some good stuff, but don't know anyone who actually knew him well.
Hard to say anything nice about Paterno after the way his career ended.

His greatest accomplishment?
Having a trucking TV chimpanzee named after him.

I’ve made this comment before but it’s worth sharing. Bryant’s whole demeanor on sportsmanship changed when Bud Wilkinson went to the UK locker room after the Sooners lost to the Wildcats to congratulate him. He said that he never forgot that moment.
Bryant was also known for showing class. Knock your opponent into the ground. Then lend a hand and bring him back up.
Legend!

One of my favorite stories is when Coach Bryant, who was a good friend of George Steinbrenner, arranged an exhibition game with the Yankees at the Joe. Coach Bryant, Steinbrenner & Reggie Jackson were walking across the Quad when a group of students began applauding & waving. Reggie paused & smiled, tipped his hat & waved back, to which Steinbrenner replied "Reggie, they're not clapping for you,"

I thought he was very disrespectful to Forrest Gump.
