During our Super, the announcers mentioned that Bianco coached Eddy Furniss in the CWS at LSU and now coaching Will in the CWS this year.

Curious, has anything like that happened before? I’m sure there have been fathers and sons that made the CWS before, but playing for the same coach feels unique.

Probably especially if you’re counting assistants.

eh, probably not. It’s rare for father and son to both make a CWS.

If it has happened before it was probably either Rod Dedeaux, Auggie Garrido, Mike Martin, Mark Marquess or Gene Stephenson. Maybe Cliff Gustafson or Ron Fraser?

I think in some postgame, someone said it was the first time it had happened. Neat little side story. Was also neat that Will make the big hit to get us to Omaha after his dad was so great in the postseason.

Yeah, the combo of needing a 20+ year coaching career and making multiple CWS 20 years apart (hard even combining assistant and head coach years) really narrows it down.

Can’t think of any UT or FSU families off the top of my head. Brothers yes, father/son no

I remember Eddie. Hell of a player. Not exactly what you are looking for but Mike Martin coached 6 generations at Florida State including coaching his son. Does that count?

It is a pretty good story. I like Bianco and Im obviously a big fan Eddy. Would have liked to have gotten Will here too but I get the draw. It’s my understanding that Eddy and Mike are pretty tight.

Yeah, I can’t really think of any. Most professional baseball players kids tend to go pro out of HS. I’m trying to think of good college players that have had sons play. I was born in 81 and started really following college baseball around 91 when LSU won the CWS. So I’m not sure of players from the 60’s through early 80’s unless they were stars. Koby Clemons played at Texas but it wasn’t under the same coach as Roger. If it’s happened it’s probably some obscure player and son. Gene Stephenson coached his brother Phil in the CWS. Also, I don’t think it happened but maybe Skip too from his time as an assistant at Miami under Fraser?

Roger Clemens and Doug Hodo, Jr both played on the 1983 UT national championship team, and both had sons who played for UT in the CWS. Kody Clemens in the 2018 CWS, and Doug Hodo, III in the 2022 CWS. The fathers were coached by Gus, and the sons by Pierce though
