The first AP award was 1957.
I agree with using the API and UPI as the measuring rod.
Takes the “Field and Stream” and “Better Homes and Gardens” off the table.

Better tell Ole Miss to Pressure Wash the three titles they spray-painted on their little stadium.

I get it. I'm not here to complain about Nebraska's #1 final 1970 AP ranking.
Note that the AP only switched final poll from before bowls to after bowls in 1968. And remember why both the AP and Coaches used to do it that way - bowl games were viewed as a reward bonus game not a playoff. That mindset shifted in the 1960s.
I get it. And, like I said...since you were named by more than one selector recognized by the NCAA, I would say it is legitimate to claim. One reason I even mentioned it was because a Texas fan in another thread scoffed at Georgia claiming 1942 because we finished #2 in the AP poll, and Texas finished #3 in the AP poll in 1970, but he was positive that was justified.
That said, if a team is named by a recognized selector then I actually have no problem with it being claimed.

The six did not count 2021 or 2022. Are you saying Georgia had 7 before counting 2021 and 2022? It is possible i missed something....not just from Georgia but for other schools as well.

The NCAA does not recognize national championships.
If someone believes otherwise, please point me to the rules and regulations for deciding these things.
They just list whatever.

I keep a list of the ones I consider legit for SEC teams.
Which SEC teams claim the most bogus national championships
All 3 of the Florida claims are legit IMO.
1. Oklahoma - 7 claims, 0 are bogus, 0% bogus claims.
2t. LSU - 4 claims, 0 are bogus, 0% bogus claims.
2t. Texas - 4 claims, 0 are bogus, 0% bogus claims.
4. Florida: 3 claims, 0 are bogus, 0% bogus claims.
5. Auburn - 2 claims, 0 are bogus. 0% bogus claims despite the push by some ignorant Auburn fans to change it.
6. Alabama - 18 claims, 1941 is bogus. 6% bogus claims.
7. Georgia: 4 claims, 1942 is bogus. 25% bogus claims.
8. Texas A&M: 4 claims, 1927 and Jimbos 20XX are bogus, 50% bogus claim
9. Tennessee: 6 claims, 1938, 1940, 1950, 1967 are bogus. 66% bogus claims.
10. Kentucky: 1 claims, 1950 is bogus, 100% bogus claims.
10t. Arkansas: 1 claim, 1964 is bogus. 100% bogus claims.
12. Ole Miss: 3 claims, 1959, 1960 and 1962 are bogus, 100% bogus claims.
I guess I need to change it for Auburn, they will drop like a rock in my next update.

I was just about to post a link to Auburn's official site that lists more than 2 claimed national championships.
They now list .... National Champions 2010, 2004, 1993, 1983, 1958, 1957, 1914, 1913, 1910.

I went back through the NCAA.org site and still count 6 + 2 for the playoffs.
1920,1927,1942,1946,1968,1980,2021 and 2022

1938 and 1940 are not bogus. 1950 is dumb. 1967 is a toss up

That's one of the dumbest things I've read on the topic.
quote:
The AP poll, for example, did not count bowls for some 30 years, then did count them thereafter. That makes AP "champions" before and after 1967 completely different things.
So basically he applies revisionist history because he's too dumb to take things into context.

Nope, it’s biased. In1908 LSU was the only undefeated team. They list 1908 LSU as “not contenders”.
