Please pardon my ignorance (I’m on a personal hoops self-teaching journey) ... but who was Auburn’s coach prior to Pearl, and where is he now?

Tony Barbee, he's been an assistant at Kentucky since Auburn fired him.

Excellent.
Thanks, Bowl.

Eta: You too, bwigtiger.

The way you describe Auburn during that time is A&M’s sitrep now. We want to be consistently competitive; hoops just isn’t an ingrained part of our culture.
Really hoping Buzz can do something about that.

Barbee, he’s an assistant at UK now. To be fair, their aren’t many people who could have this success at Auburn.

You don't need "to be fair" with Barbee. He didn't just fail to win here. Even most Auburn fans don't realize how bad of a shape Barbee left us in bc a lot of y'all weren't watching then. People really don't realize how big of a miracle Pearl has performed. Him even finding enough D1 caliber scholarship players to field a team that first season, especially with the recruiting restrictions that we're still in place on him at the time, no other coach in America could've done that.

The thing with Auburn was, we always had the potential. We're right in the middle of some really good recruiting grounds, ATL, Bham, the gulf coast regions and Florida panhandle. And the potential for fan support was there too, go back and look at videos of our crowds in the late 90s with the Chris Porter and Doc Robinson teams, or to the 80s with the Sonny Smith teams when Auburn was one of the better teams in the conference.

But then we went over a decade where we were honestly probably one of the bottom 3 programs in all the major conferences and the administration didn't seem to care, so I guess a lot of Auburn fans decided they didn't care either if the people that could actually do something about it didn't. But a lot of us also suffered through it. I was in 6th grade when I watched us go to a Sweet Sixteen and we didn't make the NCAAT again until I was 26 years old. So yeah, you can imagine how happy a lot of us are to just be where we are right now.

Glad to hear it.
Your trajectory definitely looks positive.
I’m glad for your fans.

I don’t know enough about Texas hoops talent to comment on our recruiting opportunities; but we should’ve been far better than we’ve been, regardless.

LSU and Kentucky are 1/2 game ahead of Auburn right now. Tomorrow night Auburn plays the team that beat them by 19 earlier this season.
