Let’s go back to the late 1980s or 1990 and use conferences at that time to get a blueprint of how to realign for today. How can we take the original conferences and organize to fit all 69 programs currently in “Power Conferences” plus add one more to get to an even 70 (Boise St in this case).

Here’s how it should look:

SEC: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss St., Tennessee, Vanderbilt

PAC10: Arizona, Arizona St, Cal, Oregon, Oregon St, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington St

BIG10: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan St, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio St, Purdue, Wisconsin

Southwest: Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech….. plus add Utah, BYU, and Boise St.

Big8: Colorado, Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St….. plus add Louisville and Cincinnati

ACC: Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, N Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Wake Forest….. plus add Florida St and S Carolina

Big East: Boston College, Miami, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, W Virginia….. plus add UCF

Note: Rice, SMU, and UConn have been left off since they haven’t shown much effort to fight back to get into a power league.

Seven divisions of 10
All teams play everyone in their division + 3 non-conference games
Conference championship games decide a playoff spot, plus one wildcard for an 8-team playoff.

One governing body with a commissioner. Equal revenue sharing

it's actually not a bad idea
several tv networks could be involved

I would also fix the transfer portal, not allowing transfers within conference without sitting out

your basketball mid majors would be fine as well in this scenario
minor sports would be intact and less travel for those sports

If you had one commissioner and one office overseeing scheduling, you could also try to make sure schedules were fairly even.

Protect about 9 OOC rivalries and make sure those get played every year:

Florida vs Florida St
Florida St vs Miami
Georgia vs Georgia Tech
Kentucky vs Louisville
Texas vs Oklahoma
Missouri vs Illinois
Virginia vs Virginia Tech
Notre Dame vs Michigan
Notre Dame vs USC

Everyone not on this list would play 9 conference games plus 3 OOC games picked by the scheduling body to try to get as much cross-divisional play in as possible…. And an effort to try to even out schedules so the Big East played just as tough of schedules as the SEC, etc.

We would never have added those 2 schools back in the day. There was no need to add anything. Adding the SWC was a huge mistake. I'd rather play 7 conference games and 5 OOC games than add 2 city schools.

We already had USUC, Kicked'em out. They went independent, and are now living on SEC welfare. They do provide a good win for you the majority of the time, but, if they beat you, they are like a woman, you'll hear about your mistake for 20 years.

That is the best case scenario.

Add notre dame and Penn state to the big east and that is a great league.

9 game SEC schedule, round robin playing everyone every year, 3 OOC games. Where do I sign up?
