SEC All-Sports Trophy Through the end of the 2011–2012 school year, the Florida Gators have won 204 Southeastern Conference (SEC) team championships, the most in conference history.[69][70] The SEC All-Sports Trophy began in 1973 as the Bernie Moore Trophy and tabulated the league's best men's sports program.[71] In 1983, the SEC also began recognizing the best women's sports program in the conference, as well as the best overall SEC sports program.[72] In 1994, the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group assumed responsibility for awarding the trophies.[1] In the 39-year history of the awards, Florida has won nineteen Women's Trophies, sixteen Men's Trophies, and twenty-two Overall SEC All-Sports Trophies (including twenty-two of the last twenty-five).[1] SEC rival Georgia won the overall 2005–2006 All-Sports Trophy to snap Florida's record streak at fourteen straight (1990–1991 through 2004–2005).[1] Florida reclaimed the SEC All-Sports Trophy for the 2006–2007 school year, and the Gators again swept the overall, men's, and women's all-sports trophies in every year since.[1] The Gators are the only SEC sports program to earn all three SEC all-sports trophies in a single year, and have swept all three trophies twelve times.[1]

While the Director's Cup may not be a big deal to you, isn't it a fair indicator of the overall performance of a school's athletic department?

UF can never win it by the way. The West schools play more sports than the SEC schools.

To add to what roadGator posted, UF has won 208 SEC championships, well ahead of the next closest school, Tennessee.

not really....they give too many points for sports that aren't carried by all programs.

Precisely. How does one judge the better AD? Crushing dominance in one or two sports or high-level play including titles in a large number of sports?

I would favor the latter.

Sports within the Athletic Department. I think you may be emphasizing the Big 3 sports instead of the athletic department as a whole since that is what the OP (original piggy) was referring to IIRC.

They take each school's best 10 Men's and 10 women's sports in which the NCAA awards a trophy (EDIT: and FBS Football according to the Coaches' Poll). Schools like Stanford and UCLA play more than 10 sports for both genders so they can basically pick their best scores. SEC schools simply do not play enough sports to win this award (as was said above).

For example, Equestrian is not counted in the Director's Cup standings.

Most people here seem to suggest some sports are "worth more" than others. The Capital One Cup attempts to take that into account.

The OP stated that Arkansas was the best Athletic Department in the SEC. He is obviously wrong. When discussing an AD for a school I'd presume that covers all sports which is best judged currently by the Directors Cup or whatever it's called now days. The last year that's completed had Arkansas as the 4th ranked SEC team in 17th place I think.

LINK

Arkansas was 20th. Still a respectable school and Athletic Department. If Texas A&M were included they would be the 5th ranked SEC school instead of the 4th.

Here's how I would rank them, taking into consideration every sport, men's and women's - historically (all-time)

1. Tennessee
2. Florida
3. Louisiana State
4. Arkansas
5. Georgia
6. Alabama
7. Kentucky
8. Ole Miss
9. Texas A&M
10.Auburn
11.South Carolina
12.Missouri
13.Miss.State
14.Vanderbilt

Although IMO there is not much difference between #s 7-12.
Also A&M and Mizzou compiled their history in other conferences. USC and Arky as well..

Are you aware that Ole Miss has 0 national championships in any of their sports? They should be 13th, right ahead of Mississippi State.

Can you break this down to ROI? How much money was spent by the AD to the national championship numbers? How about revenue generated by each AD to expenses...broken down by program of course
precisely. it's ridiculous to give track and field the same weight as football. that's why the capitol one cup/director's cup is flawed. it doesn't weight sports by amount spent from the ADept. sports like equestrian don't have near the competition that fb or basketball do.

in addition, it would be even more accurate if the amount spent were factored in like the quote. iow, roi.

if this were done, lsu would be rocking. lsu doesn't have the highest budget in the conference but can hang with florida. lsu probably gets the most bang for the buck

You left off the Arky cross country titles too (unless they are lumped into the numerous T&F titles?
