Just like Herman said, it's common sense that when you buy a used gun from a private seller you run the serial numbers and get a bill of sale.
IF you did that and it turns out that the gun was reported stolen after the fact is the only way I could see that being a valid excuse. Just out right "not knowing" a gun is stolen a weak arse excuse, and even if the law is written in a way that somehow that works legally as an excuse every judge I know would still call you an idiot for not checking first. Ignorance of the law has never been a valid defense to my knowledge before.
And I'm not sure what kind of guns they had, but I assumed they were handguns. If that's the case then they were likely still breaking the law because most states don't let people under 21 ride around with handguns unless they're unloaded and locked away.
And way to be typical Bama trash and trying to deflect by trying to drag Auburn into everything with something completely unrelated. Hope your parents feel good about raising a complete POS .

not sure if you understand that phrase. I'm not trying to deflect from arrested Auburn players by bringing up completely different situations involving Bama players. And I know what you're going to say, but I don't answer for all Auburn fans in the hypothetical situation where you're going to say that Auburn fans would do the same thing that Bama fans are doing right now.

According to the report, the pair of players had been shooting guns at a range earlier that night but did not take them home. Robinson reportedly bought the gun a year ago, did not know it was stolen but never got it registered.
I'm not aware you have to register a gun but i have never bought one not in a store that pulls the check on me first.
And every time I go to the range, I have my pistols in my range bag riding in my trunk area, not tucked away under a seat.
Let's be real, Robinson is a first rounder and will play if Saban can finagle it. They would both have to be charged with felony gun charges for Robinson to not play, Hootie might be fricked though.

Do they need to be registered in LA or AL? I didnt think so

Says the guy who made a legally incorrect statement and added the tag that 'is a valid excuse if you play for Alabama'. You brought the school comparison into the mix, not me but I'm sure you knew that, but since you are only a step or two from being a Phan level homer you simply fail to care.
The law has been linked in many of these threads, but once again I am sure you do not care. Your opinion is clearly more important than facts. By the way, how many judges do you know? How about prosecutors? Maybe defense lawyers? If you really know any, you should ask them about an affirmative defense. Maybe they will explain it to you in single syllable word so you will have a chance to understand it. And while we are on the topic, nobody is claiming ignorance of the law. Pretty sure everyone knows having stolen property is illegal.

No, no, no, no, and for the ten thousandth time NO!
There is no gun registration PERIOD!
Your pistol permit in Alabama DOES NOT record anything about the identity or number of any weapons you own!

I'm not saying he should spend the rest of this life in prison or anything drastic like that. We are talking about him being allowed to be in a premier College Footbal program after having been arrested for a felony.
Just envision this situation. Cam plays without missing significant time, goes on to have a strong year, he is now again a “hero” … an 8 year old watching on TV as commentators praise Cam’s playing ability…. “isn’t this the guy that was smoking weed and carrying stolen guns a few months ago”…. Crime pays… it’s cool to be a thugh as long as you have some athletic ability.
NICE frickING MESSAGE!!

A conceal carry permit is not close to the same thing as registering a gun.
As far as I know not only is it not required to register a gun in Alabama, but it's also not possible. If you're registering your guns somewhere then I'd like you to tell me where because I've never heard of anybody else doing that.
Usually it's easy to spot a first time gun buyer because they'll ask "How do I register this?" and then everybody laughs at them

So tell me how Cam is going to prove he had no reason to suspect the gun was stolen? Sorry if I have a hard time believing that simply walking up to the judge and saying "I didn't know" is enough to cut it.
I'm not going to read through 8 pages, but if you link the law and I'm wrong then I'll admit it.
And like I said, even if Cam is in the clear legally for the gun being stolen, any judge worth his stones will still tell Cam that he's an idiot for not running the serial number and getting a bill of sale. That's gun buying 101, and most judges will take it as an opportunity to explain that to him so he learns his lesson and saves himself this trouble in the future.
And just so we're clear, I don't think Cam is some thug. Lord knows I smoked my share of weed in college and at 20 years old I believe he was naive enough to not think to check if the gun was stolen.... All I'm arguing is that ignorance of the law is almost never going to hold up as a defense.

It will be hard. His testimony will not be enough, but if he can give who he bought it from, find witnesses to back up where and when he bought it, and evidence of how much he paid (like a bank record of a withdrawal at the time of purchase) he can carry the day.
And while we are being totally honest, I think both should have played their last down at Alabama. They do not deserve to have their life ruined and should get a second chance, but it should be somewhere other than Bama.

69.1 Illegal possession of stolen firearms. It is basically defined in part as possessing a firearm which has been the subject of any form of misappropriation.
However, the statute also calls as an affirmative defense that the offender had no knowledge the firearm was subject to such misappropriation.
In short the prosecution would have to basically prove he knew it was stolen, which is not really easy to do unless they would have some sort of direct proof as to how he came into contact with the weapon.
Remember, since this is a criminal case, its not CRob's responsibility to prove his innocence, but the State to prove his guilt. They probably do not have that in this situation.

That isn't how an affirmative defense works. CRob was in possession of a stolen gun, which is a crime. All the state has to prove is that the gun was stolen and Crob had it. The affirmative defense puts the burden on CRob to show that he had no reason to suspect that it was stolen.
