and very few have coached cellar dwellars like UT and AU to number 1 in the country several times, perenial tourney runs and overall fielding a top team in the sec. tennessee was trash before he got there they arent the vols now that barnes has. all the historic coaches did it at UCLA, UK, DUKE, UCONN, KU......PEARL has done it as 3ish star schools when he took over. all he needs is that title. if you got a group of scrubs pearl will make them as good as any coach to ever live possibly could.

I think he's a good coach, but "one of the best in CBA history"?
One final four. 17-13 overall record in NCAAs
Maybe he wins it all this year, but it's premature to call him one of the best in history.

I think you’re underestimating how bad auburn has been at basketball historically

Rick Pitino has entered the chat. And you get the feeling he’s about to take another school on a deep run at St. John’s as we speak.

Duke had no history before coach K.

I mean you can even argue Cal’s success at UMass and Memphis before Kentucky as well (no I’m not calling Cal the best all-time).
Here’s the reality, Pearl got black balled by the basketball community because of things that happened behind the scenes at a couple of his stops at smaller schools. That doesn’t happen and he likely ends up at bigger schools than Tennessee or Auburn. But he didn’t and that’s worked out well for Auburn.
He is an incredibly good coach. I don’t think he’s the best all-time though.

His final 4 at UMASS and runner up at Memphis were both vacated lol. Cal is a successful coach not close to being one of the best. Pearl hasn’t won shite, what he’s done is impressive but he’ll never reach Calhoun, Coach K, Boeheim, or even Billy Donovan level.

He's MBB's answer to the Great Saban.

Pearl with annual rosters of all five stars with NBA superstars in and out each season such as he would have at Kentucky or Kansas.
How many titles do you think he wins?

That puts us prior to 1980

He’s a good coach, but he still needs a title just to enter the conversation of all time greats. He’s been there since 14, this is his team built on his resume not barns past. I wouldn’t consider bill snyder the best ever despite a damn remarkable run at ksu.

He's in that tier with Kelvin Sampson.

Ucla was a powerhouse before wooden? Duke was decent but K elevated them. Calhoun is a GOAT, same with Lute Olson.

I honestly don’t know. Predicting titles, even with talent, is incredibly difficult to do because it doesn’t include matchups, seeding, and other variables.
Rick Pitino for example has taken three different schools to Final Fours. He’s won National Championships at multiple schools. And he’s got St. John’s playing at a pretty high level at this point. I don’t think Bruce Pearl is better than him at this point.

We’re talking straight up coaching ability. That doesn’t disappear because they were vacated.

Congrats on not reading my whole post.

If your wins are vacated because you were cheating, your coaching should take a hit too. Cal has also left every program in a shitty spot.

Since you’re struggling with context here.
I didn’t say Cal was the best of all time. Not even close. I was simply pointing out that other coaches who have won NCs at major programs (the first post I responded to) have had some success at smaller programs beforehand.
And no, coaching ability doesn’t go away because some kid had someone take his SAT.
