He WAS college football broadcasting way back when ABC was basically the only network to cover it.

So many great memories of his game calls.
Hate to hear this. Rest in peace.

quote:
Gave us some of the greatest lines in CFB history including “whoa Nellie”,”the 6’4 sophomore from Aaaallllllabama”, “and that big Mack truck in the Georgia backfield” (HW). Roopville, Georgia guy too. He and Frank Broyles gave a southern tilt to CFB when the world hated all of us.
Yep. Born in Roopville and lived there a few years and then, I have been told, his family moved to Bremen.
I've lived in Carroll County most of my life and am often surprised how many around here don't that.

Before the championship game I thought of him saying "We're gonna have a real snot knocker in Atlanta tonight"

I too enjoyed him immensely.
The only bowl game that I thought he really tanked was the 1998 Rose Bowl. He was so pro Michigan that it was sickening.
Then, later I found out that he was a graduate of Washington State and I guess he did not want to come across as biased for his Alma Mater. In the process , however he went to the other extreme. Of course I can’t stand Michigan either so it was double stab from him.
Otherwise he is right up there with the best.

He was the GOAT. RIP KJ. I'll never forget many of his colorful phrases. "Whoa Nellie!" "Scoring on this Miami defense is a lot like climbing up a cactus." and "The big uglies on the right side really opened up a hole for him on that run."

Late Friday night, I think I heard the door slam...and they're beginning to grieve in Opp and Eastaboga, Cullman and Montgomery...
Best college football annonuncer ever...there'll never be another like him. One of the few I can recall who was, for the most part, universally loved by peers, players, and fans alike...
I think Rick Reilly summed it up best in an SI article after the bowl games in January 1993:
At announcer, Keith Jackson. Still the best. Who else, on your deathbed, would you want to say the word "A-la-BAMA!" God bless this man's larynx.
