That’s actually why I think they might have done it. But it’s not a great place to be if he does not do well the next two years.

We have to keep him bc of the contract is not fun.

"We're proactive about contracts as best as we can, and we're watching the market, we're certainly recognizing the performance of our coaches, the role that they play in leadership, the importance of not just talking about stability and the forward thinking and what our program wants to do in tracking toward future success but demonstrating it," Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione Jr. said. "I think our move and the contract for Coach Venables is a perfect example of that—what he's been doing since he's been on campus for two years and as we're moving into a new league and setting the foundation in the right place for us to be successful moving forward and pursue championships, just like all the best teams are trying to do and the ones that we're competing against." - Joe Castiglione

Those kind of things are important for non revenue sports. In football, all that matters is your record.

And what else could your AD state?

Maybe it ends up being great insight. We shall see.

OU will be in Top 10 this year.
It’s what they do.

He didn't purge jack shite. That happened all by itself.

Venables was a damn good DC as long as he could steal the other teams calls but after that was taken away his coaching ability was nowhere the same.

If you fully believe that you have the right guy at the helm of your program, it’s more than okay to put your money where your mouth is.

Okay.

I personally think it's foolish to give a coach a raise if they haven't done enough to earn a raise yet. They're under contract and performing to the level of what was expected of that contract (or worse). Seems odd to give them more money in a scenario like that, even if you do think they'll turn it around and exceed expectations in the future.

In my eyes, Venables value as a head coach is pretty much the same as it was when he was initially hired by OU.

It will be interesting to see the opinion on this next year. If I remember correctly OU is going into this season with a new OC and DC, new QB and an entirely new offensive line. Not really a recipe for success.

Venables has a lot of say in the defense.

Littrell was a major upgrade at OC. The offense under Lebby was just boggling.

After a 9-3 regular season.
OU went 10-2 last year.

Was OU in the SEC? The Big 12 is nowhere near as tough as the SEC.

That's not what we were talking about.

Back to top Pete Thamel @PeteThamel Sources: Oklahoma has agreed to a new six-year contract for coach Brent Venables. The new six-year deal includes a significant raise for Venables, and there’s been an uptick in overall program commitment as OU heads to the SEC.
