Could not have went more opposite than the Avery hire

This is hilarious

I dunno why it'd be hilarious. It's a pretty typical hire.

For the money bama clearly has to spend, it’s exceptionally underwhelming.

Has he ever made th tournament? Honestly don’t know

Seems like something to know before laughing at it and calling it extremely underwhelming.

Yea he's been twice and won first round games in both. Was a 6 seed this year.

It's an up and coming mid major hire. It might work it might not, like all of them.

Oh I’ve watched plenty of basketball and have attended plenty of CBB basketball games. Certainly not of Buffalo. I’m not THAT deep of a CBB fan to watch Buffalo lose to Bowling Greene on ESPN +++ network.

That resume isn’t scaring anybody. Congrats on the dud. ?

Will Wade had 4 seasons and only 2 tournament appearances. He also had a much better job than Buffalo for 2 of those seasons and LSU fans think he's a spiritual being.

Based on calling him a dud? Okay

If you've never seen Buffalo play, never heard of their coach and admittedly are NOT a "deep" basketball fan, then how in the frick do you know that Nate Oats a "dud"?

You’re mad now aren’t you.

Twice as many tournament wins as Will Wade.

Talent wise, Saban has well underperformed verses his offenses.

Sounds like, recruiting and development wise, Gus has well under-performed versus Saban.

I mean, ok.

You went from a former NBA coach of the year, rumors of Matta, to an up and coming mid major.

That’s underwhelming. Doesn’t make it bad. But certainly underwhelming.

Him dogging Arizona last year is solid though. I forgot about Buffalo doing that.

I don't think many on here really follow Buffalo Shooty hoops enough to offer an informed opinion but the guys I follow on twitter who would know all seem to think highly of him

Yeah the experts are praising the hire and Byrne said everyone he talked to said to hire him but its still a crap shoot to me. Grant was the same way

Everyone saying we needed a big name. Avery was a celeb media splash hire, and recruited somewhat decently, but was a shite coach.

At this point I'd rather see good clean basketball with mediocre players than a bunch of 5 stars go out there and look lost.

I think Byrne did his homework with this. He said he'd been watching him for a while, and heard from a lot of people that Oats was a phenomenal coach.

Idk how good he is at recruiting, but at the very least I think he'll put an organized well-coached team together.

I know of Buffalo’s success, nothing of Oaks. Couldn’t even tell you who Murray State’s basketball coach is. But I guess I’m not a CBB fan. Don’t mind me for a while.

At least you are honest about it, not sure how you can give an opinion on it though without knowing that basic information.

Avery sure is getting a nice post-firing bump on here. The former NBA coach of the year had kids openly talking about bad effort after roughly half the games the last month of the season.

The only legitimate big time option was Matta, and nobody knows what his situation is health/back in the game wise.

Programs like ours generally have to hire mid major coaches (Wade, Davis, White) or fired retreads (Howland, Crean, Barnes). You just hope you evaluate the one you get right and they can produce in the knife fight of a big time conference.

So about that question I asked earlier:
Does he have any ties to the south and was he coerced into hiring Bucky?

Nope

TBD, though I can't imagine he was forced into anything. Wouldn't shock me if it was suggested. Would also be totally on board with it.

Some of that Nike scandal money needs to make its way to AAU Alabama then. Could be a rough first year of recruiting.

Im talking about at the time Avery was hired. Bama seemingly was going for a bigger name.

Again, I don’t think it’s a bad hire. Seems to be a quality coach.

I'll be honest, I don't give two shites about recruiting at this point. I just want to see a roster that knows how to play good fundamental basketball.

And his reputation is that he's a good recruiter, so I'm not super concerned. Basketball recruiting is so much different from football recruiting, I'm not sure how much regional ties even matter that much anymore.

Agreed - also Battle was just desperate

On paper it seems fine. Never know with these guys until they actually do it in a big league, though. Hopefully it works out, but I'm pretty cautious about it.

Have we gotten Tuscaloosas take yet? What level of fapping we talking here?
