Big12/Bowlsby: All of this was predictable, look at the signs

For anyone that was really dialed into what was happening and was keeping their ear to the ground, I think they could have seen OU/TX projecting their moves years in advance. If Bowlsby was paying attention, he would have seen the chess moves being made and major problems in advance. A couple articles highlight the exact moves being projected:

- In 2016, the Big 12 conducted a nationwide review of 11 possible additions. Both OU/TX said they would not agree to an extension of their grant of rights (GOR) beyond 2025, regardless of the expansion outcome. At the same time, the ACC had agreed to a GOR through 2036 (a 20 year extension) with the creation of the ACC ESPN Network. Several sources also told CBS Sports that OU/TX wanted the flexibility to explore their options after 2025. The existing Big 12 schools also decided against expansion, even though 4 schools could have added an additional $800m-$1b in revenue under existing rights agreements. Both ESPN and FOX were against expansion. LINK /

- In 2017, Paul Finebaum said he had spoke with multiple sources that said OU wanted out of the Big 12. OU had previously bragged they were invited to the SEC in 2010 and TX was "30 minutes" from leaving for the PAC12 at the same time. He also predicted the Big 12 would cease to exist in 5 years and that expansion always goes "in twos." He said the lack of a sports network was a critical problem. LINK /

- In 2019, a sports columnist at AL.Com pretty much predicted everything that would happen. He said the Big 12 was the key to SEC expansion, expansion would come at the Big 12's expense, said realignment would crank up in 2022 with the expiration of TV deals in the Big 12 and Big 10, and spoke at length about OU/UT as the obvious additions with the growing gap in television revenue. No doubt. Mizzou and A&M intimately knew the XII was going to destined to fold and the two name brands up for grabs were going to be Oklahoma and Texas. That Sankey didn't reject them was only common sense. He cut off the B1G, PAC and ACC in one bold stroke.

I honestly believe the other leagues could pool their best teams and still not best the SEC-16.

How do you prepare for your top 2 money winners to leave? You don't. All you can do at the end of the day is throw a fit about it when it finally happens. Which, I thought, this commish is pretty good at.

None of this is shocking in the least. It was clear to me that once Mizzou, Colorado, Nebraska, and A&M left that the Big 12 was no longer a sustainable conference, and its teams would get poached by surrounding conferences waiting to feast on the carcass.

The only thing even remotely surprising in all of this is that the smoke is discussing Texas to the SEC instead of the PAC 12. Back in 2011, I thought that the Longhorns, like the Buffs, were wanting to be a part of the West Coast elitist crowd.

OU to the SEC, on the other hand, seemed inevitable.

All he has to do was listen to OUs own president who is the reason Mizzou pulled the trigger when it did:

"I don’t think OU is going to be a wallflower when all is said and done," he said, boasting that the Sooners held major interest in multiple conferences while the Big 12’s foundation appeared to be crumbling.

Texas A&M had already announced its intention of leaving the Big 12 and Boren’s quote begat a response that spelled out certain instability ahead for the conference.

"It’s somewhat surprising that comment came out because I know everybody’s been working together," then-Missouri athletic director Mike Alden said in response. "You put something like that out there and it just reinforces that image of being unstable."

Two months later, Missouri announced its intention to join the SEC the following year.

Deloss Dodds and his sock puppet Dan Beebe set all this in motion long ago. Bowlsby and the rest of the Irate 8 were just along for the ride after them. The Smart Folks got out when they could.

Bowlsby wants to be mad at someone, he needs to go take a swing at Dodds.

I agree with you -- when the core Big 8 schools started to separate (or looked at other options) in 2010 (NE and MO), I think it set the wheels in motion for eventual change. I think there was general trust/friendship between these schools, but it became every man for himself with the creation of LHN. As a Mizzou fan, I will always miss playing NE and KS.

The Big 12 was never stable, from the outset there were legitimate concerns about whether it would survive.

Then once the news broke back in mid-2010 that the PAC-10 was seriously considering expansion, and shortly after that UT and OU were trying to make a deal to head west, everyone should have known that the Big 12 was ultimately doomed. If OU and UT weren't happy there, the conference was screwed. Within the next year, the four Big 12 schools with better options bailed: Colorado, Nebraska, A&M, and finally Mizzou.

Then it became a lack of options for the other Big 12 schools not named Texas and OU. Best bet was to hang on tight and pray that the big boys didn't leave them behind.

Maybe Kansas will need a money game after they end up in the MWC.
