No one, and I mean no one, goes to Alabama for food.

Not true anymore. Birmingham has been getting a lot of national pub as a hot food city the last few years.

We're consistently on lists of under-the-radar or up-and-coming food cities in the US

We have a few award winning and globally known chefs.

We had a restaurant win the top award in the restaurant industry in the country. A few other restaurants that are consistently nominated for other big national awards

There are absolutely serious foodies who take notice of these types of things and come to Birmingham to try the food scene.

Andrew Zimmerman said it best just this summer. LINK

quote:

“I think if you’re not eating in Birmingham these days, you’re missing out on something really unique and special,” the noted chef and TV food personality said. “I think Birmingham has solidified itself as the hottest small food city in America right now.”

quote:

Zimmern admitted he’s become “kinda addicted” to Birmingham. It was his third trip to the city to tape episodes for his TV empire. But this time he made the most of it, taping for two separate shows – The Zimmern List, broadcast on the Travel Channel, and a yet-to-be-named show coming this fall to the Food Network.

quote:

I think when you look at the history of restaurants in America, 50 years from now, Highlands is going to be written about. It’s 35 years old, and it’s better now than it’s ever been. I mean, how many restaurants can say that?”

Here's another very interesting note from that article that I didn't know about until now. The rich get richer...or should I say the tasty get tastier

quote:

Another of this year’s Beard winners – South Carolina barbecue pitmaster Rodney Scott, best chef Southeast – has announced plans to open a restaurant in downtown Birmingham.

New Orleans has 20 James Beard award winning establishments. So many people in this thread just trolling right along.

Meanwhile, you look at year after year of the James Beard Awards you've cited and New Orleans is all over that list.

Good to see Birmingham seeing some success. But there's no real competition from anywhere in Alabama when it comes to food if New Orleans is in the discussion.

It honestly started in Missouri, why have an issue with this?
Earl and Agnes Lambert with 14 cents between them, borrowed $1500 from Tish Jones and with 5 employees opened for business in a small building on South Main Street in Sikeston Missouri.

Nobody thinks Dreamland is even the best rib place in Tuscaloosa County led alone the state.
