He did not "slap his wife around." Even in the pre-internet 24/7/365 coverage, Bear liked him some Bear and rubbed some folks the wrong way. Don't you think if he roughed up Mary Harmon in Lexington, College Station or Tuscaloosa/Birmingham it would have made the rounds?
Considering in 1950 or so while at UK he wanted to recruit the son of one of the line cooks at the dorm (who was a black fellow),who did wind up signing with a Big 10 team, I want some links or proof of him being racist.
I thought Bryant was awesome. I'll never understand the zeal so many have to attempt to trash the man.
