But when you subtract how much Bear gave to recruits and their coaches to get them to sign, it's probably closer to even.

(I kid, I kid) You know someone was gonna do it.

Arkansas was top 4 back then?

Really shows you how much Frank Broyles held us back.

I thought Coach Bryant made $1 less than the university president? That was the maximum amount he felt a college coach should be paid.

Probably did on his base salary and got paid for all the extras.

I think he had something to do with Ziegler Meats for instance. No telling what all he had interests in

I believe I remember reading he had a deal in place with Krystal restaurants as well (and now his great grandson & Tide QB Paul Tyson has a Krystal NIL deal, fwiw).

He made substantially more than 450K a year even in the late 70's. Nothing wrong about it. He was the beneficiary of lots of gifts from former players at A&M and Alabama in terms of business deals, etc. I know of one deal he had with some former players who got into banking that went very well for all involved. Like I said, so what?

There were 4 very prominent businessmen in Tuscaloosa who "took care" of Coach Bryant from the time he came back to Tuscaloosa until his death.
I'm not gonna name names, but most folks around town knew exactly who they were (one was a cousin of mine). Coach was into a ton of different things under their direction...all successful.

That was his base state employee salary. Booster associations always pay the brunt of coaches salaries.

In the pros, Joe Namath became the first big time
national commercial sensation---on a more regional
level, just the face and name of Bear Bryant
could have sold property on the bottom of the
Gulf of Mexico.
On the South Central Bell commercial, the Bear
was supposed to just say, "Have you called your
mama today"----but he ad-libbed the last line,
"I sure wish I could call mine." It was left in
and those are the words that drove hundreds of thousands to the phone to call their mamas.
I SURE WISH I COULD CALL MINE

Bryant Bank is relatively new. The one I'm thinking of was primarily in Illinois if memory serves. Bear did quite well and Paul, Jr has done phenomenally well

Ummmm ok so you proved Alabama has been buying titles since Bear. Ok. Not really front page news. Money talks. Not news.

It’s actually a fascinating article, for any college football fan who appreciates history. Why are you getting all emotional?

I think it's safe to say coach Bryant probably made close to 1 million a year with all his incentive deals. That's close to 4 million a year in today's money. Not bad for an old country boy from Arkansas.
