Most successful thing within Arkansas borders.

He was on his way to be the Arkansas coach when Pearl Harbor broke out and he turned the car around to enlist. I’ve always wondered if Arkansas might have been the one place he wouldn’t have left to go to Alabama.
Fun fact he also left school because he was so pissed at Wallace Wade (or might have been Frank Thomas) and packed up to transfer to LSU because he had a friend on the team. Had he not been talked out of that how would history be different?

I believe Bryant was known to say that the reason he worked so hard in his life was to make sure he never had to go back to Fordyce, Arkansas.

Bryant was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham

So your state is so awful he was only willing to go back when he was dead?
That's an odd flex.

Arkansas really has to reach deep to find ANYTHING good about itself

Yep- 2 of my Grandparents are buried there. Saw his gravestone at both funerals.

He also said he went to Alabama because it was easier to get to than Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Went to a funeral for a longtime family friend at the same cemetery he’s buried at in Birmingham. Don’t remember driving to Arkansas for that funeral

Bryant I think grew up following Bama football. Arkansas was bad and no one really cared for it until an outsider such as Frank Broyles changed all that.
He would leave for a better program then eventually for Bama. Arkansas wasn't very good during his younger years.
Now if he actually graduated from Arkansas and stayed then I think he would done better than Broyles but not by a great measure.

What a load of shite! Coach Bryant came to Alabama, along with Don Hudson, as an Arkansas country boy recruited by Coach Hank Crisp. They came to Tuscaloosa by train, and he was an Alabama man from day #1!
Hell, he married his college sweetheart from U of A, and never looked back!
Coach Frank Thomas and Coach Crisp took care of their players back then because they came out of The Depression, and had nothing, and Coach Bryant never forgot that.
