I don't think they intended on Hurts to get the bulk of the snaps, but it became clear early on that Barnett was a deer in the headlights and we playing scared. Hurts played so well so early - and showed he wasn't shaken by the moment - that the staff (in my opinion) made the decision to roll with him for most of the game to see what they had. He showed he was the better player. Barnett didn't like that so he bounced.

Barnett was a quitter. He made his choice to quit during the season and put our QB situation in a tough spot. That's fine, it's his call and he made it to help himself personally (which is fine), but you can't then complain about people being pissed about it.

Things change. Once the lights turned on the true freshman just looked and played better. If I had to guess there is a bit of revisionist history going on for these guys to say that they had some sort of guarantee of starting/playing. By all public accounts the QB situation was very much unsettled and open for the taking going into the USC game. When Hurts was in the there the team got on a roll and the rest is history.
I think Barnett in particular has a lot of potential and could have been an effective QB for Alabama but he didn't look quite ready and Hurts' effectiveness made the rough tougher for Barnett and he bailed. Likely a good personal move for him in the end although it put Bama in a bad spot depth wise.
Not sure what Bateman is thinking. After he got passed by Coker and then passed by Barnett (and then of course by Hurts), he had to know his role at Bama was as a backup. He's likely running 3rd string this year at Utah. Wish him the best and hope he gets a chance to play.

I didn't watch the game, but how bad was Barnett? 2 series seems quick to get the hook, especially if the game isn't getting away and it's the opener. I'm guessing pretty horrific.

Ok he wasn't good enough to play in the SEC at Alabama. If he was he would have separated himself from both Bateman and Hurts. Clearly he did not.

Bingo. Barnett wasn't ready for the role. Hurts took advantage of the opportunity he was given. It happens. Barnett should get over it and admit Hurts was a better QB.

He looked 2 steps slow and mentally overwhelmed. Hey, maybe that would have improved, but my uneducated guess is they already had that fear from practices (which we know had not been great for 2 years) and this just confirmed it. Then, they put Jalen in for a few series, were curious enough to continue with him and the rest is history.

I'll disagree with that as well. He didn't look that bad against USC. He would have done fine once the OL settled down.

He had happy feet in the pocket, struggled gettign the team out of the huddle a couple of times, missed a couple of easy throws.
He wasn't horrible, but clearly just nervous. And maybe he did get the hook a little too quickly. Hurts did botch a handoff on his first snap, but settled in quickly after that mistake. It was clear by halftime Hurts was a better QB and had better command of the role.

Meh...players transfer. It happens. If Saban would have said, "He is no longer with the team so I have no comment" he would have diffused any opportunity for a media schlep to try and skewer him.

If it doesn't work out, you don't quit to assure yourself that you play as soon as possible.
So you stay longer to ensure you have sit out an extra year out of principle? I would expect a coach to either not comment or say we wish him the best. Saban cares about winning at Bama (rightfully so) you think he really cares about whats best for his back up QB.

Looking back, Barnett said he believes the plan was to play Hurts all along.
That was not the plan at all. Barnett looked scared as hell and in over his head. The surprise was how calm Hurts was as a true freshman. BB choked, and Hurts did not. Hurts won the starting job because if it. I have no hard for feelings for BB, but he needs to watch the game and see for himself, the look in his eyes vs the look in Hurts' eyes. At the way he played vs the way Hurts played. BB started, the plan was to give him most of the snaps. He had his chance and blew it and he should just say that, and that he is happy to have another chance out west.

He really did look very overwhelmed those first two series. Not just ineffective but like the moment was too big for him.
He did come in later after the game was in hand and played pretty well. You could definitely see he had talent when he played in the second half.

Out of commitment, yes. You act like that is some sort of foreign concept. It's the norm. Barnett went against the norm. QB's transfer all the time. QB's don't leave in week 4 all the time.
Again, that was his right, but you can't then act all surprised and upset when people that you are screwing by backing out on your commitment for the season get pissed.

He looked overwhelmed and rattled in the USC game. O-Line is what it is. Hurts came in to the game with the same O-Line and looked calm, collected, and made plays.
Aside from the USC game - Barnett should have separated himself in practice and left no question. He did not, and he did not win the job ultimately.

Heading into the game, Barnett said he was under the impression the job was his and Bateman believed he would split time with Barnett, which is what Saban said publicly would be the case the week of the game
So he thought the job was his but he knew he'd be splitting time with the other QB? Come on. Barnett may have been #1 in name, but obviously that wasn't set in stone.
If you have the job you're not splitting time with anyone.

Blake Barnett vs. USC
He made some nice throws late, but Alabama was up 32 by the time that he got another chance and had settled down.

Barnett was 1 play away from being the starter for Alabama. Hurts wasn't great in the back end of the season. Barnett could have easily kept his spirits up and battled and who knows what would have happened. He chose to quit instead. I don't have much sympathy. Bateman just didn't have the talent, but I respect his decision to stay with the team. Wish him luck.

It's a commitment to play football not join the military. Coaches break their commitments all the time. If the kid was terrible and not going to play who was he screwing by transferring. I would bet most players would say do what you have to do to further your career.
