It was so bad...
SEC basketball used to be like the SEC East of football.

There were a couple of those seasons where 4 of the 6 teams in the SEC West had RPIs > 150, and Auburn, State and LSU had 2-3 teams who had RPIs south of 200.
The rising tide has certainly lifted all boats.

I don't - every SEC season would be us sitting at 9-5 after the OOC schedule knowing we couldn't lose a single divisional game because it would be a bad loss and our NCAA hopes would be dashed

That makes sense. I think the way I was raised and considering all West opponents as rivals makes me want it to be separate.

No one knows what you’re talking about
I know that Hank Gathers died and that Bo Kimball started shooting his first free throw of every game left-handed to commemorate him.
Did you know that?

I'm not sure Loyola Marymount and the term "good defense" were ever used in the same sentence. Did you watch them play? Half the time it seemed they were happy to let the other team score so they could get the ball back.

We got a beat down last night but we’re still an ncaa tournament team. It’s good to see other names in the conference in the mix besides UK. It’s good for everyone to be honest. It would be cool to see this Bama team or any sec team for that matter make a sweet 16 or elite 8 run.

That Loyola team played in Atlanta. I was on the flight with them going to the West Coast. Bunch of big dudes. As soon as the seatbelt sign went off they all stood, no legroom in airline seats. Even the coach was about 6’7”

I remember Loyola not playing the best defense because they didn't mind the other team making their 2 point shots as long as they kept hitting their shoot right away 3's.Bama should've beat them but Wimp had us passing up way to many baskets to keep it low scoring. We had a helluva Sweet 16 team with quite a few NBA players.

I was in the stands when LSU beat them 148-141. It was fun, but noone played any defense, though Shaq did block quite a few shots. Marymount just responded by staying on the perimeter or waiting til Shaq got tired from the insane pace of play.

Actually Loyola Marymount was a terrible defensive team. Gave up over 100 points a game most nights. They just outscored you by getting up as many shots as possible.

The Paul Westhead system was about basically making the entire game a fast break. The defensive philosophy was basically we are going to wear you out and eventually you are going to get tired and miss or play out of control trying to keep up.
The Oats style is basically making the entire game a secondary break. Our tempo isn't as much based on sprinting down the floor and making you tired as it is getting the ball down the floor, catching you out of position and then making you chase until we get the open shot we want - either from 3 or a dunk - which is much more like a secondary break where the next group of guys fill in and you run a quick set. It also lends to being able to actually play defense on the other end.
But there are some similarities - the main one being the philosophy that teaches your kids to have zero fear about taking shots. If you run the offense and get a look, take it. You won't get taken out for missing shots. You will get taken out for not taking open shots. It leads to a supreme confidence in kids.
