Same shite was said about Saban.
I've seen this posted more than once. How are the situations even remotely comparable other than both being at Alabama?

Both control freaks, short and coaches at Bama?

I guess. I haven't trolled any of these threads and think it'll turn out to be a good hire, but I don't get comparing those situations at all.
He just has a lot of unknowns at the college level. He has a personality and should be able to generate excitement again for Bama fans. That matters a lot.

Saban is a college guy who tried his hand at the NFL, didn't work out and came back to college.
Johnson is an NBA guy who has nowhere to go except college and needs to rehab his image.
Completely different situations.

Those saying this isn't a good hire are forgetting the situation UA was in last week. They were embarrassed nationally. This flips the script and gets excitement back in the program.
Will it work out long term? Only time will tell. I think if UA gives him the money to stack some college weathered assistants, it could end up being a home run.

They are the exact same because they are both weak attempts by rival fans to deflate the joy of bama fans with some ominous impending doom which may or may not occur.

So troll for a troll. I got you.

Not one Alabama fan thinks that our program is top notch. We are pretty aware of where we are at. But we are in a position where it is athegamble on a NBA coach of the year and NBA champion to turn it around is better than the gamble that what we had was going to turn it around. Maybe AJ has what it takes to recruit. He already has some established relationships with AAU teams.

Our program needs a face more than anything. Our 5 year vision is apparently really good enough to where Marshall mentioned it. I really am not worried about recruiting at all. There have been rumors that Pettway and Pearson could be retained. That would keep a lot in place then Roy Rogers (Bama Alum/Current Wash. Wizard Asst Coach) has been circulating as a possible assistant. The team should get some good coaching.

Actually, both have reputations as being hard nosed coaches who's style isn't effective motivating rich superstar pro athletes. Both coaches are better suited to the college player.

Agreed. That's what Bruce did for us. He kept people excited this year even though we weren't that good. It'll show when recruits visit. Selling out for UGA the last home game of the season helped solidify Horace Spencer's commitment. It'll be huge to get your fanbase excited again.
I think who he hires will be very important. He'll be coaching kids out of high school and not pros. I'd imaging that could be a different challenge. The recruiting speaks for itself. He's never done it, but he has the personality for it. It all depends on how he adjusts to the college game.

Pure speculation. Tony Barbee was a hardass and his players hated him.

A situation that Bama put itself in by firing a coach that really didn't deserve it and very publicly going after a coach you were never going to get.
You may have set your program back by getting rid of a good young coach like Grant. Unless you're UNC or Kansas it takes a while to win in college basketball. Grant was at Bama 6 years. John Wooden only made the tourney twice in his first six years. It took him 14 years to make the final four and he's without question the best CBB coach of all time

Holy frick.....Grant was sucking the life out of the program

How? List all the coaches in modern times who have made a final four in their first 6 years at a non-blue bloos basketball school.
I can think of:
-Shaka Smart with a VCU squad built by Anthony Grant.
-Brad Stevens, a prodigy who was an assistant at Butler 6 years before he became HC
-Rick Barnes made it in year 6, and Texas is no slouch

Anthony Grant was not a bad coach. He would have gotten Alabama back to the tournament. He had injuries and players leaving to deal with in the last couple of years. Alabama did make the wrong decision, I believe, to get rid of him and we'll see whether it was a setback or not. They might have made up for it with this hire.
Just because people didn't like his personality wasn't a good enough reason to get rid of him. As long as the players were coming in he would have had them competitive. They have players for Avery to work with.
