Rod brought it home. Verne may not know where he is, but he has a general estimate of how far Saban's nether regions are from him.

It might be the shittiest call for a legendary play ever
I disagree. What’s shitty about it? Way better than most of the garbage I’ve heard these days.

For some reason, I'm wanting to say that wasn't Gus' move...could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time this hour.
Pretty sure Gus made the call but then there was also a timeout before the kick and an assistant swapped out the player that had first lined up deep in the end zone (can't remember the name) with Davis. Davis wasn't a regular starter on FG teams.
Edit: Yeah, you can see HERE (LINK) that #24 (Ryan Smith?) is first lining up deep, so the play had already been called. Then a timeout occurs and you see Davis lined up deep.

Yeah prior to the Kick 6 a lot of people didn’t even realize FGs were returnable
it wasn’t common and definitely not your first thought when attempting a FG. You’d be much more worried about getting it blocked

It's barely a call at all for one of the biggest plays in CFB history? He dropped out for the last half of the play. Verne has always lacked enthusiasm for all things AU and it showed there (and was worse for the UGA call).
There was a reason random people who don't care about CFB or Auburn were posting "covers" of the Rod Bramblett call and nobody gave a shite about Verne's version. It's completely unremarkable.
