More run-ins with the NCAA.

But we can hire tubby...thats the point. For auburn right now a proven guy is a much better fit.
Why would he leave Minnesota, is what I'm wondering?

I guess that's what I get for trying to converse with a Barner.

I thought you were more concerned with why Auburn would want him when there are so many young unproven guys out there.
Oh, and maybe he's cold in Minnesota?

To me, thats irrelevant. As long as he comes to auburn. I won't lie when his name surfaced i dismissed it, but if he's willing i don't care what the motivation is (minus of course intentional cheating).

Relax Nancy, I wasn't taking shots at UA. FSU just had several wins stripped from them, Free Shoes U, etc.

its this simple.
tubby smith is one of the best x's and o's coaches that there is in the biz. his problem was on the recruiting end. he absolutely has to improve in that department, bc if he was struggling to recruit to uk, auburn will be a nightmare. he also got in trouble at uk for playing his son, who sucked nuts

Both actually. He's seemed genuinely happy at UM, even with job offers the past two years. I was just wondering why his name has come up.

Tubby would be a great hire for auburn. The announcers on the Minn.-Xavier game said Tubby has been a head coach 19 yrs and has been in the tournament 16 of those years! Do it Aubbies!

Its suprising no doubt. But if he's willing to come Auburn would be a fool not to have him.

You're crazy, why go consistent winner with a national championship to his name when you can go no-name young guy with potential?!?

This is where you're completely mis-understanding my stance. I'm not saying AU shouldn't hire a top notch, established coach, if he's willing to come to Auburn. I'm saying that considering Tubby Smith is at the end of his career, and he hasn't set the world on fire at Minnesota (when AU is a comparable job), why spend the millions extra on him?

His annual salary at Minnesota is 1.8 million and I'm pretty sure his buyout is around 3 million. If he's hired at Auburn he'll probably be making more money yearly than Chizik.

It would put butts in the seats...I don't see how Tubby Smith's name itself doesn't recruit
Posted on 3/19/10 at 12:08 pm to beaver
last year he had a five star and a four star signee...the year before he had 2 4 stars...Auburn is lucky to get one four star every other year...I'd be fine with his recruiting...

i don't think hiring a young coach in basketball is that important..it's not like football where you have to come lay the foundation..in basketball you can turn a program from losers to winners in two years..and if we only do get four/five years out of him hell that probably beats the average tenure in the sec anyway
Posted on 3/19/10 at 12:18 pm to beaver
C'mon folks...this is not difficult...Auburn needs an established coach that will bring some stability to the basketball program...so what if he coaches 5 more years and retires...in that time the program should be headed in the right direction and he can help set in place a replacement...Bama fans are sold on the up and comer direction...and that is fine...but nothing has happend yet to show that your choice in a coach will be the right one in 5 years...Lebo also had moments when he looked like he was about to get over the hump...but guess what...it never happend...Tubby Smith with a brand new arena/facilities should help the Auburn program tremendously....

He declined to come down for an interview. So what? Go to Birmingham and convince him to come down and check out what Auburn has to offer. You do that and I'm pretty sure you guys would be set with a great coach in Anderson right now instead of searching for a new coach.
I agree with you. I don't blame Anderson one bit. He wanted assurances that the job was his before he came to Auburn for an interview and burned bridges inside the UAB program. Richardson and Baird wouldn't do it so he wanted them to drive to Birmingham to conduct the interview. They wouldn't do that either so enter Jeff Lebo.

Yep, I am going to guess it will take around 2-2.2 million to get him. Chiz will get another nice raise next year though
