This is a complete lie. So here's the facts Auburn beat #5 #7 #19 #8 and lost to #3
Miami beat #13 #12 #1 and lost to #16

About time clearly played a tougher schedule than the other contenders. Not so sure 93 and 04 should not have serious claim also. War Eagle.

Tom Osborne's pride in going for the win vs a tie and assured NC is the only reason it is a conversation.

I think there would have been some backlash if he had kicked the EP. It had nothing to due with his pride, Osborne was old school who believed never put your fate in the hands of the voters. I remember when Pat Dye went for the tie against Syracuse in the Sugar Bowl. He took a lot of criticism from a lot of people and that game didn't mean much for Auburn, but kept Syracuse out of the conversation.

Some backlash but nothing too major. They would have been 12-0-1 and the undisputed champions of college football. Auburn fans would have had no argument at all in that case.

Lol, of all the arguments revolving around 1983 you are the first to try and make the case that Auburn didn't have, by far, the toughest schedule.
Of course that's because your facts are totally wrong, unless by 6 you meant 1.

Nebraska played 2 RANKED teams prior to the OB. AU beat 5 ranked teams and played 5 Top 10 teams, beating 4 of them. I think they would have a good argument. The Press had made Nebraska unbeatable, it was the only reason Miami jumped everyone.

I love how Barn fans cry about 93 and 04.
You were INELIGIBLE in 93. That’s like Bama claiming an SEC West championship in 02.
And in 04 y’all were gonna get Curbstomped by USC.

Miami had played three ranked teams and none of them were in the Top 10 prior to the OB. They were blown out by UF and AU beat UF that year.

Most fans do not claim 93. They were undefeated, but FSU was a much better team. 83 and 04 are legitimate claims.

It is understandable, as you play to win the game and not lay up.
But, Nebraska would have walked off the field the only undefeated team in the nation. Au had a 13 point home loss to TX earlier in the year. Texas lost their bowl to UGA. And, Miami came in at #5.
Some would certainly have hated a play for a tie, but it would have secured a national title for the Huskers.

Lost to the only good team they played.

See my previous post on AUs and Neb schedules. No comparison. The fact that AUs only loss was against UT and UTs only loss was against UGA (who had loss to AU), reinforces that argument.
Osborne even said afterwards he did not want to put the Championship in the voters hands. He knew the events of the day.

Wasn’t this The Opelika Golf Magazine NC?

And, he made a poor strategic decision.
Can't fault him for it though. 12-0 and unanimous champ was on the line if they get the 2 pt conversion. But, the smarter play would have been a tie.
He was Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy when he should have been David Simms that day.

So AU was going to beat SC in 04, who beat them a combined 47-17 in 02 & 03, including a shutout? AU math at its finest.

They didn't even have a good enough argument to stay in front of Miami who beat no one that season but Nebraska. Even after losing to Miami, Nebraska still got 4.5 first-place votes in the final AP poll.
