to be fair, UGA wouldn't have won the West either if they were in it.

And that would be your opinion. You, no=r anybody else can say that definitively.

The only way you can defend this argument - with the current playoff in place - is by offering someone else who was more deserving to take our place.

Go ahead and try.

I have never heard an Auburn fan say UGA shouldn’t have won in 1980.

I've seen Auburn fans say UGA had a super easy schedule that year, but I haven't seen any say they shouldn't have won it.

I have actually not seen any Auburn fans say this, honestly.

I may be the board's biggest critic of UGA's 1980 MNC, but I have never once said they shouldn't have been NCs.

My critique has always been that UGA probably played the weakest schedule in the history of MNC's that year.

This is the schedule UGA won a national championship with in 1980:

Tennessee 5-6
Texas A&M 4-7
Clemson 6-5
TCU 1-10
Ole Miss 3-8
Vandy 2-9
Kentucky 3-8
South Carolina 8-4
Florida 8-4
Auburn 5-6
GA Tech 1-9-1
Notre Dame 9-2-1

So, in summary for UGA in 1980:
- Their quality opponents in 1980 were two 8-win teams: Florida and SOUTH CAROLINA.
- They played two 1-win teams on their 11-game regular season schedule.
- 8 of the 11 teams they played on their regular season schedule had losing records.
- Their regular season opponent winning percentage that year was 37.8% (i.e. their "average" opponent was a 3 or 4 win team).

That is one ridiculously easy schedule. But a team can only play those that's in front of'em on any given day. The pathetic schedule sure wasn't the UGA player's fault.

I said AU was more worthy of a title in 1983 than UGA in 1980 and that is obvious to everyone.

AU 1983 opponents

Southern Miss (7-4)
Texas (11-1)
Tennessee (9-3)
Florida State (7-4)
Kentucky (6-5)
Georgia Tech (3-8)
Mississippi State (3-8)
Florida (9-2)
Maryland (8-3)
Georgia (10-1)
Alabama (8-4)
Michigan (9-3)

Note also that Georgia only lost to AU (in Athens) and Florida only lost to AU and Texas only lost to UGA. FSU lost to AU, Florida, Miami and Pitt. FSU was really good even though they had several losses. Also Maryland with Boomer Eisiensen was 7-1, ranked #7 when AU beat them.

Anyway, compare that to 1980 UGA. 1980 UGA probably would be 6-5 vs 1983 Auburn's schedule. Or 6-6.

I should also note I specifically said that UGAs 1980 title was legit in that thread about it last week.

C'mon, our '83 schedule was much more difficult than our
'80 schedule (Clemson,UCLA,UF,AU and Texas) and we were
minus HW and still finished in the top 5...doubt you'll
find many UGA fans that thought the'83 was better than '80

I was saying 1980 UGA would probably have been 6-5 vs the 1983 AU schedule.

UGA was really good in 83 and 82. 81 too for that matter. That 1980 UGA team was the weakest of the 4.

1983 UGA was either the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country in 1983. Behind AU and about even with Texas. Either one Texas or UGA was the real #2 in 1983. Florida was the 4th best.

I understand that just pointing out that a weaker team with an SOS much closer to AU's in '83 had a very good
season. (I get that AU's was tougher)

Nah,although they had a better defense.

Not really. Texas beat Auburn by 2 TD, and Georgia beat Texas, so I am not sure why you think it would be obvious to everybody. You played a tougher schedule than Georgia did in 1980. Congrats. You also lost a game, and didn't play in a game that was considered a national Championship game.

I love how people love to make proclamations about things just like they were facts.

How's this? 1983 Auburn would have gone 6-6 if they had played the schedule of 1980 Georgia.

See? I said it, so it must be true.

Maybe. But that's another little gem that is pure speculation on your part. More hyperbole that can't be proven.

1983 Auburn was the worst Auburn team of the 1980's.

So, we are just going to ignore that Miami and Nebraska even existed?

that would be your opinion.
It is not opinion that Auburn finished the regular season in the West with one sec loss. And, Georgia played Auburn in the regular season and lost. Assuming Georgia won all of their other games in the west and against their SEC East opponents, they still lost to Auburn. Co-division champs, the tie goes to Auburn to represent the West in Atlanta. Obviously, there are lots of variables, but, Georgia could just as easily have found themselves in the same situation Alabama was in.
