But the improvement in the AU basketball program is likely to be more long-term than UGA in football.
As soon as UF and Tenn get back up to speed and if USC continues to be a solid squad, the UGA dreams will disappear.
Like tears... in rain.
I'll have what he's having...
You've got Kentucky, Florida, and Texas A&M all having very mediocre to poor seasons relative to where they have been on average. Vanderbilt is pulling in quality talent and should rebound from the cellar pretty nicely. But we're to assume that this means less than UF picking up a coach that hasn't been able to consistently beat teams where he's been out-talented, and UT after nearly 2 decades of cellar dwelling somehow rising "back up to speed" quickly... meanwhile, USC *is* a solid squad, and probably the second best team in the East by a wide margin. I'd say that's the most challenging game on the schedule for 2018 for us on paper... on the road early (second probably LSU in BR)... but we do at least out "talent" them... home field + seasoned QB + more experienced roster may be enough to steal it next year... will have to see.
There is about a 2% chance that Auburn can even come close to performing at this level again next season... let alone over the long haul.
Meanwhile, UGA is essentially lapping the field on the recruiting trail on the east. Do I expect UT and UF to be at 2017 levels forever? Hell no... but we also won those games by fricking ~40 each (garbage time TD for UF not withstanding). Ultimately, the SEC will run through Saban in some shape or form until he decides he's had enough in all likelihood, but a reasonable assessment would be that UGA has more staying power at this juncture than AU basketball.

When was the last time Auburn Basketball won a national Championship?
quote:
Is a Georgia fan really saying this?
Answer the question. The OP asked a question and insinuated Georgia could not win because we had not won since 1980. So if Auburn is going to win isn't it pertinent to see when they last won a basketball national title?
You guys really are impaired when it comes to reasoning and logic, aren't you?

tOP insinuated correctly and the comparison of Auburn basketball and Georgia football is dead on the target since 1980. Hope this helps.

I'm fairly confident that UGA will win one in the next 5 years.

I agree. Kirby learned much from the Master of Minutiae.

Well, if Georgia can't win a football national title because we have not won one since 1980, when can we expect Auburn basketball to make the Final Four since they have never done that?

History trying to revise the fact that AU dominated that first game. Rematches suck.

Are you assuming that Saban is retiring in 4 years?
Actually, even with Saban at Alabama, I think we have a shot. It would just be easier if he were not around.

Why do rematches suck? More often than not (By a large margin) the rematch goes the same way. At least, that is what a lot of Auburn fans were saying before the SECCG.

I believe the stat was 5/6 previous rematches in the SECCG were won by the team that won the first time? Don't feel like looking it back up, but I do recall it not being a particularly close stat.
The real story is that Auburn was simply not a particularly good team this year away from home:
LSU - L
Clemson - L
SECCG - L
UCF - L
All away from home. JHS was an incredible home field advantage this year. I've never bought into it in the past that their home field advantage was that strong, but watching games there this year, it was clear that it did provide a pretty substantial edge.

One was followed by an appearance to the Playoffs and a trip to the National Title game. The other was followed by a heartbreaking loss for the SECC and loss to a non P5 team. Want to guess which is which?
That's a nice spin. Try this one: One was followed by an impressive win against the #1 team in the country, and then a tough loss in a game where the team ran out of steam in the 4th quarter. The other followed up the win with an impressive win against the #2 team, and then a tough loss where they ran out of steam in the 4th quarter and OT.
Stop pretending like UGA's season was so much better than Auburn's. Both teams went 2-2 against top 5 teams this year, UGA just played 2 of their games in the playoffs instead of the regular season.
Also, I'm sorry no Auburn fan cares about losing to UCF. Once the playoffs were created, all interest was lost in other bowl games. Our seasson didn't change win or lose that game. We were one quarter away from having a chance to play for a title, and we blew it. UGA was one quarter away from winning a title and blew it. Congrats.

Can you just STFU with this narrative?
Fact is AU under Gus is HORRIBLE outside the friendly confines of JHS.0-8 vs his biggest rivals on the road and 1-4 in bowl games and the ONE bowl victory was the freaking Birmingham Bowl.
The loss to UCF wasn't a fluke and had nothing to do with "not caring" They would have beat you in Atlanta,Orlando or any place else outside of JHS.

That's not a spin. those are facts. Spin is when you try to change a bad fact into something that doesn't look so bad.

See? That's spin! I just LOVE how you omitted your loss to a non P5 team! Congrats!

Well, let's take a look, shall we?
Georgia 13-2
Auburn 9-4
Georgia #2 in country
Auburn #10
Georgia played for national Championship and lost in OT.
Auburn played in the Paech Bowl and lost to a Non P5 team.
Yet in your mind Auburn's season was close to Georgia's?
quote:I guess you are used to it?
Also, I'm sorry no Auburn fan cares about losing to UCF.
quote:Why? How did the playoffs change anything? If we did nto have the playoffs Auburn still would not have had a chance to win the National Championship, so how did the playoffs change anything from a Bowl standpoint?
Once the playoffs were created, all interest was lost in other bowl games.
quote:Yes, it did. You dropped in the rankings, you added another loss, and you embarrassed yourselves.
Our season didn't change win or lose that game.

UGA was one quarter away from winning a title and blew it. Congrats.
And Auburn wish they had done that very thing.
I guess you forgot that Auburn lost on the final play to FSU in the same scenario, right? Congrats.

You can expect an Auburn basketball championship before a UGA football championship so says I.

Day 61: Auburn melt continues
Truth is, Auburn beat their two biggest rivals and watched them play for a National Championship. They even went as far as to root for big brother Alabama out of fear of UGA. On top of all of that, they gave a shitty coach $50M! I’ve never seen Auburn football so low honestly.
To answer your question, AU basketball is looking at NCAA sanctions so I don’t think we’ll see many AU b-ball threads in the near future. On the other hand, UGA just won the SEC, beat OU in the Rose Bowl and lost to an incredible Alabama team in OT. I think you know the answer
