Well as long as we're talking about old strange looking mascots this was Sir Big Spur (aka pre-Cocky days)

Thanks...I was aware of the "plainsman" thing but did not want to rub it in and come off as a member of the "I told you so's"...and what would be WRONG with a 7' eagle roaming the sidelines, think about it !

I pretty sure I read somewhere - some Auburn book I have, don't remember which one at the moment - that we were the Plainsmen to start off with, and we only became the Tigers once Heisman got here and changed it because he liked and respected the Princeton Tigers.

Easy, unless the official Auburn website is incorrect, he is wrong.
While outsiders have referred to us as the Plainsman, it is incorrect.
Sandman: I've read most books out there about Auburn, and I've never read that.

This is how we became the tigers.
The nickname "Tigers" comes from a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village," published in May 1770, "where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey..."
The term "Plainsmen" comes from a line in that same Goldsmith poem, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest (sic) village of the plain..." Since Auburn athletes were, in the early days, men from the Plains, it was only natural for newspaper headline writers to shorten that to "Plainsmen."
Petrie was the one that donned us the Tigers, though outsiders did refer to us as Plainsman some. The University made us the Tigers.

Now then, to answer this pathetic post: Yes, I used the f-bomb (you must have a hard time visit this site, cause it's dropped a lot here), but that doesn't give you the right to insult my intelligence. I'm not wearing a skirt, so I'm not hiding behind anything and I'm not acting Internet tough. That would be you buddy. Also, I don't ever remember asking for your sympathy, so save it for people you interact with on a daily basis.
