Auburn thinks they’re a consistent title contender and they’re really not.

No they don't. But they have every right to expect to stand toe to toe with Bama/UGA/UF/LSU and win a few of those away games. They should expect to dominate he lower level SEC teams in this conference and not have nail biters a few times a year.

They were paying a king's ransom for a product that wasn't getting any better, just stagnant with a piss poor recruiting class coming down the pipe. Unacceptable.

Serious question - do you think Gus was fired because he was 0-for BR, Tuscaloosa and Athens or because of the South Carolinas and Tennessees?

Not beating those 3 on the road isn't so bad - losing to really bad teams when you get top 5 money is.....

2014- #6
2015- #8
2016- #9
2017- #9
2018- #12
2019- #11
2020- #7

These rankings may beg to differ, and would phenom in the PAC 10, but the problem is that anywhere from three to five of the teams that AU plays every year have comperable or better recruiting ranks during these years, and have better player development. This is where Gus stumbled, especially in the QB position.
Tubbs had his imperfections, but could take some abysmal recruiting rankings (relatively speaking) and cobble together some pretty good teams

It is when you play them on the road every other season.

Pretty sure it was a combination of both.

Not to mention that a couple of those road losses (UGa in 2016, LSU in 2017) were to pretty bad teams. I think Gustav is probably still HC if he wins both of those, even with the loss to SC this year.

When I saw 40 years I was certain this was about UGA.

That depends on what the definition of consistent and contending is?
Remove AL as it currently stands from the equation, because what Saban has done there transcends reality.
AU contending could be considered 57,58,63,72,83,86-89,88,93(meh),98(meh),04,10,13,17(?)
Considering the talent and history in the SEC, and compared to other "Ag" schools in Div 1 football, being in a hunt every 5-10 years is pretty consistent.
Fill in the years between with the other power 5, with some overlaps and those five teams will have about the same spread, if not a little tighter.
What it boils down to is every SEC power 5 team believes they are a consistent contender for the title and they would all be correct. Football ebbs and flows in the SEC power 5, coaching, recruiting, catching some breaks, with only one that wins to play some chump from the Big 12 for the prize.
Consider Clemson, another "Ag" school. Prior to Dabo, could they boast the same consideration as a consistant contender from 1980? They contended and won once in 1981 and of course from 2015-2020. Will they maintain their program after he leaves (god forbid to AL, since he may be Saban reincanate)? Syracuse? OK State? Michigan State?

Kind of both.

0-12 is worse than top 5 money should get.

I’m not saying 12-0, but 0-12 in BR, Athens, and Tuscaloosa is not good enough for top 5 money.
