Auburn: The most Consistent Roller Coaster in CFB

Auburn has had five football coaches during the past 40 seasons. In those 40 seasons, Auburn has experienced 8 seasons in which they either won an SEC Championship or had an undefeated season (1983, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 2004, 2010, 2013) yet they've also had 7 seasons that ended with a .500 or worse (1981, 1991, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2012).
Often lost in this wild roller coaster of a program is just how unbelievably consistent Auburn is no matter who is the coach. Each of their five head coaches during the past 40 seasons has had at least one SEC Title or one undefeated season..... and 4 of the 5 had at least one losing season (only Gus did not).
Look at how close their coaches have been in Winning %:
71.1%- Pat Dye (1981-1992)
70.7%- Terry Bowden (1993-1998)
68.0%- Senator Tommy Tubverville (1999-2008)
66.0%- Gus Malzahn (2013-2020)
63.5%- Gene Chizik (2009-2012)
Only 7.8% separates the best from the worst.
Now look at Final AP Poll Standing:
#9- Pat Dye (1981-1992)
#11- Terry Bowden (1993-1998)
#12- Tommy Tuberville (1999-2008)
#15- Gus Malzahn (2013-2020 Projected)
#20- Gene Chizik (2009-2013)
Again, each of their head coaches has had Auburn typically ranked between #9 or #20 during the span of their tenure on the Plains.
Over the entire course of the past 40 seasons, Auburn has a winning percentage of 68.4%. Here's how the AP Poll standings currently look (not counting 2020 just yet):
1. Ohio State- 555
2. Florida State- 509
3. Alabama- 504
4. Oklahoma- 484
5. Florida- 468
6. Miami- 447
7. Michigan- 438
8. Nebraska- 409
9. Georgia- 390
10. Penn State- 386
11. LSU- 379
12. Auburn- 358
13. USC- 355
14. Clemson- 334
15. Texas- 315
16. Notre Dame- 301
17. Tennessee- 287
18. Oregon- 259
19. Wisconsin- 224
20. Virginia Tech- 215
They have been 12th in the nation but 5th in the SEC during the past 40 seasons.
It seems Gus was just under the past 40-year average in both winning% as well as AP Poll standing.

Thank you. Great info as usual!

It is what it is.
Gus got fired mainly because he was paid top 5 money for top 30 results.
1. Zero for BR, Athens, and T-Town. A great coach does not go 0-12 even against those opponents.
2. Blown out several times. A great coach has his team ready to compete with the best. You cannot win if you cannot get the game to the fourth quarter.
3. Recruiting has diminished every year under Gus.

Just looked into this. Final 247Sports Class ranking:
2013- #10
2014- #6
2015- #8
2016- #9
2017- #9
2018- #12
2019- #11
2020- #7
2021- #43 (currently, but only 12 commits)
What happened to this year's class? Why so few commitments. From a quality standpoint, its not a total disaster... they are 15th in terms of "quality" so I guess its not quite as bad as it seems. But why are there so few? Did AU have a lot of recent de-commits because recruits saw this firing coming or has Auburn always had this few?

Gus has not been able to recruit linemen.
We are deficient at the line of scrimmage.
Recruiting rankings do not reflect the total lack of big bodies. He has not signed a full complement of offensive line recruits for at least 2 years. It’s not an accident that 2 defensive linemen started on offensive line this year.

Auburn couldn't bring recruits to campus, and that hurts bad when they can't show off the Family atmosphere and homey surroundings. Auburn can't fall back on selling annual championship contenders or funneling a bunch of 1st & 2nd round draftees, or that they're QB/WR/RB/oline factory.

quote:Also should be mentioned, that each and everyone of these HCs finished at least one year with first place votes in the final regular season and/or postseason AP poll.

On the flipside, only one (Dye) ever won 10 or more games in consecutive seasons.

Three undefeated season , one NC (that they claim)and playing for two in the last 30 years. How has UGA done in that time frame?

All of this is to say: It's the players not the coaches that make the difference.
Translation: Auburn needs to recruit better to become more competitive.
Saban has been the best coach in college football not because of his X's and O's but due to his superior recruiting at Alabama.

They're the best mediocre program in the country. And every once or twice a century, they catch lightening in a bottle and win it all.

Roller Coasters are the most fun ride at the park. Much better than staying in the merry go round.

Auburn thinks they’re a consistent title contender and they’re really not.

Auburn begins and ends with "Beat Bama." Everything else is inconsequential.

Seriously? You had to use a 40 year time frame?

quote:No they don't. But they have every right to expect to stand toe to toe with Bama/UGA/UF/LSU and win a few of those away games. They should expect to dominate he lower level SEC teams in this conference and not have nail biters a few times a year.
Auburn thinks they’re a consistent title contender and they’re really not.
They were paying a king's ransom for a product that wasn't getting any better, just stagnant with a piss poor recruiting class coming down the pipe. Unacceptable.
